HR resume: show people outcomes, business sense and sound judgment

What recruiters scan for

  • Scale: headcount supported, number of hires, size of the programme, number of locations or business units.
  • Business-linked outcomes: time to hire, attrition, engagement, productivity or cost savings, not only activities.
  • Breadth across talent acquisition, learning and development, compensation, employee relations or HR analytics, and where you went deep.
  • Judgment in sensitive situations: conflict, compliance, change or layoffs, handled with fairness and confidentiality.
  • Communication: clear writing and an ability to speak plainly with senior leaders and with front-line staff.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Describing activities ('conducted interviews', 'organised events') instead of the outcome and scale.
  2. No business link. Say how your work changed attrition, productivity, cost or hiring quality.
  3. Vague claims of 'strong interpersonal skills' with no example.
  4. Disclosing confidential details of employee cases. Describe the pattern, not the individuals or company-sensitive data.
  5. Treating HR as only recruitment. Show analytical and change work if you have it.
  6. No awareness of compliance basics. Mention labour law, POSH or policy work if you handled it.
