- There is no single government scholarship for every MBA student. Support is category-based, mostly for SC, ST, minority and PwD students, and it runs through central and state schemes.
- Central schemes apply through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in). Your institute verifies the application, so it must be on the scheme's list for the year.
- Amounts, income limits and notified institutes change every year. Read the current guidelines on the portal, not an old list.
- Institutes also run their own waivers, and some are larger than a government scheme. Ask both.
MBA scholarships India government schemes fund are category-based, not universal: the main central schemes are for SC, ST, minority and PwD students, and states run their own for residents. There is no central MBA scholarship open to every applicant. Central schemes are applied for through the National Scholarship Portal, at scholarships.gov.in.
This post names the main schemes, what they cover, who qualifies and what to check each year. It prints no amounts or income limits, because those change and an old figure can mislead. Take every number from the current official guidelines.
MBA scholarships India government schemes: central versus state
Central schemes are run by ministries such as Social Justice and Empowerment, Tribal Affairs and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. They apply across states and are listed on the National Scholarship Portal. The portal's list for 2026-27, as we saw it on 6 November 2026, showed schemes from those three ministries and none from the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
State schemes are run by state departments for students who are residents or domiciled there. Their income limits, covered courses and dates differ from state to state. A student can often look at both, but not claim two similar scholarships at once.
Scholarships for SC, ST and PwD students
The Central Sector Scholarship of Top Class Education for SC Students is the scheme most relevant to MBA. Its FAQ on the portal says it covers notified institutions that include IITs, NITs, IIMs, AIIMS and national law universities. It supports tuition and non-refundable charges, with a cap at private institutes, plus an academic allowance.
- It is a fresh scholarship for first-year students admitted to a full-time course at a notified institution.
- Awards are made on merit within the slots allotted to each institution, and a share of slots is reserved for girls.
- Students who miss a slot can apply under the post-matric scholarship if eligible.
- Money is paid by direct transfer to an Aadhaar-seeded bank account, and a student cannot hold a similar central or state scholarship at the same time.
For ST students, the portal lists the Ministry of Tribal Affairs' National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students. For students with disabilities, it lists the Post Matric Scholarship and the Scholarship for Top Class Education for Students with Disabilities. Income limits, covered institutes and disability criteria sit in each scheme's guidelines, so check the current ones.
What institutes waive on their own
| Institute | What its own page says, November 2026 |
|---|---|
| IIT Bombay (SJMSOM) | SC, ST and PwD category total programme fee is Rs 7,55,800, with tuition at Rs 0. |
| IIT Kharagpur (VGSOM) | Tuition fee waived for SC, ST and PwD students. |
| IIFT | SC, ST and PwD students get a 50 percent concession on tuition only. |
| IIM Kashipur | Lists Government of India scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and PwD students. |
OBC, minority and EWS options
For minority students, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has run a Merit-cum-Means scholarship for professional and technical courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, at institutions the state government notifies. Because the portal's 2026-27 list did not show a Minority Affairs scheme when we checked on 6 November 2026, confirm on the portal and the ministry's site whether it is open for your year, and whether your course and institute are covered.
For OBC students, the portal lists the PM YASASVI schemes for OBC, EBC and DNT students, including a college-level Top Class Education scheme. Check whether your institute and course are covered, and look at your state's backward-class welfare department too. The portal's 2026-27 list showed no central scholarship aimed at EWS students, so EWS support mostly comes from state schemes and institute aid. An EWS seat in admissions is a reservation, not a fee waiver. Our MBA eligibility page covers category rules for entry.
Private and corporate awards
Some foundations award merit scholarships to students at selected institutes, such as the Aditya Birla Group scholarship. They are few, have their own application windows and name the institutes they cover. Check the foundation's current page for the number of awards, amount and institutes.
Colleges also fund their own awards. IMT Ghaziabad lists a merit scholarship of 30 percent of tuition for women and 25 percent for men at 98 percentile or above in CAT or XAT. Great Lakes Chennai lists 40 diversity and merit scholarships, with at least 30 percent reserved for women.
How to apply: portals, documents, timelines
- Register once on the National Scholarship Portal and complete your profile.
- Choose the scheme that matches your category and course.
- Upload the category certificate, income certificate, Aadhaar, bank details and admission and fee details.
- Submit, then follow up with the institute's nodal officer, who verifies the application.
- Track the status on the portal and keep your bank account Aadhaar-seeded.
Windows are annual, and the verification date falls soon after admission, often in the autumn. For the Top Class Education scheme, the portal's FAQ gives 31 October, or another date the DBT Mission notifies, as the last date for institute verification. A missed window can mean waiting a year.
Income limits and why they change
Every central scheme sets a family income ceiling in its guidelines, and the ministry can revise it. The number of awards also moves with budget allocations, and some schemes award by merit within a fixed number of slots.
That is why third-party lists disagree. They copy a figure from a year when the rule was different. Read the guideline for the year you are applying in, and check how income is counted and which certificate the authority accepts.
Institutes covered: how to check yours
Schemes with institute slots apply only to notified institutions, and an institution can be added or removed. Ask your institute's nodal officer whether it is notified for the current year and how many slots it holds.
Also check that your programme counts. A full-time MBA or PGDM at a recognised institute usually fits. An executive or online programme may not, so confirm before you plan around the money.
Combining scholarship, waiver and loan
A scholarship or waiver reduces the loan you need. Ask the institute how it adjusts a waiver, and tell your lender once the amount is confirmed. Some government interest-subsidy schemes exclude students who are eligible for another government scholarship or interest subsidy. The 3 percent interest subvention under PM-Vidyalaxmi is one, as described in the Cabinet's 2024 approval, so read the rules of each scheme before stacking them.
