MBA Scholarship Based on Entrance Exam Score: How It Works

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 6 min read

In short
  • An MBA scholarship based on entrance exam score is a tuition waiver or cash award a college ties to your CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT or NMAT result, usually through percentile or score bands.
  • Bands, amounts and rules are set per college and per batch. A table for the 2026-28 batch does not promise the same for 2027-29.
  • Most waivers apply to tuition only, and many renew only if you meet conditions. Ask for the terms in writing before you accept a seat.
  • Compare the rupee saving with what a better-known college adds in pay, not with the headline percentage.

An MBA scholarship based on entrance exam score is a tuition waiver or a fixed award that a college links to your CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT or NMAT result. Private colleges and some government-funded ones publish percentile or score bands for it, and a higher band earns a larger waiver.

The rules differ by college and by batch, and several are decided only after you hold an offer. This post explains how these waivers work, shows what some colleges published in November 2026, and lists what to ask before you accept one.

MBA scholarship based on entrance exam score: what it is, and what it is not

It is a discount on fees for a strong score, set by the college. It is not a government scholarship, it is not need-based, and it is not a guarantee of admission. You still need to clear the college's selection process.

Most waivers apply to tuition, not to hostel, mess or deposits. For illustration, a 25 percent waiver on Rs 16 lakh of tuition saves Rs 4 lakh, which is 20 percent of a Rs 20 lakh total fee. The headline percentage and the rupee saving are different numbers.

NMAT and scholarships: what GMAC says and what schools decide

GMAC's NMAT pages, read on 6 November 2026, describe the test, the dates and the fee but list no scholarship scheme of their own. Waivers linked to an NMAT score come from individual schools that accept it, and the schools, percentage waivers and score bands change each year, so this post prints none of them. Read each school's own scholarship page for your batch.

For NMAT 2026, the facts to plan around are these, as of 6 November 2026. Registration closed on 10 October. The exam window runs from 2 November to 20 December 2026. You can send your score to up to five schools at no extra cost, a score is valid for one application cycle, and you can attempt up to three times in a testing year with at least 15 days between attempts. See the NMAT guide for the pattern.

Private universities with percentile bands

Several colleges publish bands. The table is a one-line summary of what each college's own page said in November 2026. Check the batch each table applies to.

CollegeWhat its page lists
IMT GhaziabadMerit scholarship of 30 percent of tuition for women and 25 percent for men at 98 percentile or above in CAT or XAT (2026-28 terms), with a CGPA condition and no 'F' grade.
BIMTECH Greater NoidaRs 5 lakh for candidates with 2 or more years of work experience, or Rs 3 lakh for others, at 85 percentile or above in CAT or XAT.
NL Dalmia MumbaiPGDM 2026-28 bands from Rs 6.5 lakh above 90 percentile down to Rs 3.25 lakh at 80 to 84.99, across CAT, XAT and GMAT, with separate CMAT and MAH-CET tables.
Jaipuria JaipurRs 10 crore of merit scholarships for the 2026-28 batch, from Rs 5 lakh at 90 percent and above in PGDM; no 2027-29 table was seen.
KIIT School of ManagementA 50 percent tuition waiver for the top five in KIITEE Management 2027, and for 80 percentile and above in CAT or XAT or 95 and above in MAT.
TAPMI ManipalScholarships of up to 100 percent tuition waiver across select categories, including a 20 percent waiver for achievers.

Some IIMs also have merit awards, such as IIM Nagpur's scholarship for the top ten scorers at 95 percentile or above in CAT.

Renewal conditions: GPA and attendance

A waiver offered at admission may not continue unchanged. Some are renewed each year only if you keep a minimum grade or attendance, and some apply to the first year alone. Ask whether the waiver can be reduced or withdrawn, and in what circumstances.

IMT Ghaziabad's 2026-28 scholarship document is an example. Its merit scholarship asks for a CGPA of 7.5 or above at the end of term 5 and no 'F' grade in any course, and for no record of academic or non-academic misdemeanour. A waiver can therefore depend on how you perform after you join.

Ask for the renewal rule in the offer letter. A verbal promise that the waiver continues is not a term of the offer.

How to compare a waiver with brand

Put both options on the same sheet: total programme fee, waiver in rupees, and the median package of the latest batch. Then compare the saving with the pay gap. A Rs 4 lakh saving is recovered in two years by a college whose median is Rs 2 lakh a year higher, before tax. This is an illustration, not a forecast.

Use the MBA fees and placements table for fees and packages, and the MBA Predictor to see which colleges your score is likely to open. Its results are estimates.

Timing: apply before you accept a seat

Waivers are usually confirmed in the offer. Apply for the scholarship round if one exists, and do not pay a non-refundable deposit until you know the amount. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026, and results are expected in the first week of January 2027, so waivers tied to CAT can only be confirmed after that.

Ask which score year the college uses, and whether it counts your best score if you sat more than once.

Red flags and questions to ask admissions

  • A scholarship described as guaranteed before you have a score.
  • Pressure to pay a deposit within hours to hold the waiver.
  • A waiver that is vague about the base: tuition, total fee or first-year fee.
  • A band table that is for an earlier batch.
  1. Is the waiver on tuition only or on the total fee?
  2. Does it apply to both years, and is it renewed?
  3. What grade or attendance conditions apply?
  4. Which score year and which exam count?
  5. What happens if I leave early?
  6. Can I combine it with a loan or a government scholarship?
FAQ

Common questions

Is there a scholarship for high NMAT scores?

Not from GMAC itself, as far as its NMAT pages showed on 6 November 2026. Waivers linked to NMAT come from individual schools that accept the score, and their bands change each year. Read the school's own scholarship page for your batch, and confirm that the school accepts NMAT for your intake.

Do private colleges give waivers for CAT percentile?

Many do. IMT Ghaziabad lists a merit scholarship at 98 percentile or above in CAT or XAT, and BIMTECH lists one at 85 percentile or above. Bands, amounts and conditions are set per college and batch, so check the page for the batch you are applying to.

Can I combine a waiver with a loan?

Yes, and a waiver reduces the loan you need. Tell the lender the final fee after the waiver, and check whether the waiver applies to every year or only the first. A government interest-subsidy scheme can exclude students who are eligible for another government scholarship or interest subsidy, so read each scheme's rules before you stack them.

Is a waiver renewed each year?

It depends on the college. Some waivers renew only if you meet grade or attendance conditions, and some apply to the first year alone. Ask for the renewal rule in writing, and check whether the waiver can be reduced or withdrawn during the course.

Which colleges give waivers for XAT?

Several publish XAT-linked bands. IMT Ghaziabad and BIMTECH list CAT or XAT bands, KIIT lists a waiver at 80 percentile or above in CAT or XAT, and NL Dalmia lists bands that include XAT 2026. Confirm each college's current batch.
