IIM Scholarship and Fee Waivers: How Aid Works

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 6 min read

In short
  • An IIM scholarship is usually a fee waiver or aid decided after you get an offer, not before. Each IIM sets its own scheme.
  • The four types are need-based, merit-based, category-based (government schemes for SC, ST and PwD students) and external awards.
  • Income limits on third-party lists often conflict because schemes, years and categories are mixed. The IIM's own financial-aid page is the one to trust.
  • Aid is usually capped to a share of the batch, and some of it needs renewal each year, so read the conditions before you count on it.

An IIM scholarship is almost always a fee waiver or financial aid that the institute decides after it has made you an offer. It is awarded on need (family income and assets), on merit (such as a CAT score or a class rank), or by category through government schemes, and every IIM publishes its own rules.

This post explains the types, the timing and how to read the numbers. The examples are one-line summaries of what each IIM's own page said in November 2026. Schemes change from year to year, so read the current financial-aid page of the IIM you are applying to.

IIM scholarship types: need-based, merit, category, external

  • Need-based or means-based: decided by family income and sometimes assets. This is the most common type.
  • Merit-based: tied to a CAT percentile at entry or to the best CGPA in the programme.
  • Category-based: central government scholarships for SC, ST and PwD students, and in some cases OBC. These run through the National Scholarship Portal, whose 2026-27 list on 6 November 2026 showed higher-education schemes for SC, ST, OBC and disabled students.
  • External: alumni funds, corporate foundations and bank partnerships, which have their own forms and dates.

A single student can qualify under more than one type, though institutes often limit how they stack.

When aid is decided: after the offer, not before

Aid is generally handled once you hold an offer. IIM Bangalore's page describes means-based aid awarded after a financial-status score, and IIM Indore's admissions procedure says scholarship details are shared with admitted candidates. Do not expect a figure in the brochure.

This affects planning. You may need to decide on a seat and arrange a loan before you know how much aid you will get. Keep a loan estimate ready that works without any waiver.

How income and assets are tested

Many schemes test family income, which usually means the student's parents, and some look at assets too. Expect to submit income-tax returns or an income certificate and bank statements. IIM Lucknow's need-based scholarship is set by family income for one year, with no automatic renewal, and is paid term by term.

A student whose family income is close to a limit should ask how the institute measures it: gross or net, which years, and which earners.

Why published income thresholds conflict

Lists published by third parties have shown different income ceilings for the same category at the same IIM. The usual causes are mundane.

  • A central scheme and the institute's own scheme use different limits, and a list mixes them.
  • The limit was revised and an old page was never updated.
  • Different categories (general need-based, SC, ST, PwD) were merged into one row.
  • Income is defined differently, such as parental income against total family income.

The fix is simple. Take any limit from the IIM's own financial-aid page and note the year on that page.

Loans and aid together

Aid reduces what you need to borrow, and the two can usually run together. Ask how a waiver is applied: adjusted against a term's fee, or paid back later. That decides how much your lender should disburse.

Some government interest-subsidy schemes exclude students who are eligible for another government scholarship or interest subsidy. The 3 percent interest subvention under PM-Vidyalaxmi is one, as described in the Cabinet's 2024 approval. Read the rules of each scheme before you stack them. Documents and deadlines

  • Offer letter and the institute's fee schedule.
  • Parents' income-tax returns or an income certificate, plus bank statements.
  • Category certificate, where a government scheme applies.
  • An Aadhaar-seeded bank account, which central schemes ask for to pay by direct transfer.

Deadlines are set by each IIM and often fall soon after admission. Central schemes follow annual windows on the National Scholarship Portal, and a missed window can mean waiting a year.

What to ask the admissions office

  1. Is aid decided before or after I accept the seat?
  2. Is it a waiver, a reimbursement or a cash grant?
  3. Does it renew each year, and on what condition?
  4. How are income and assets assessed, and which documents do you need?
  5. How many awards are there, and does my programme qualify?
  6. Can I combine it with a loan or a government scholarship?
  7. What is the application deadline?
FAQ

Common questions

Do IIMs give fee waivers?

Yes. Most IIMs publish need-based or merit-based waivers, and some do both. The scale differs: one IIM covers 2 percent of a batch at 50 percent, another waives a full year's tuition for 10 percent of participants. Read the financial-aid page of your IIM for the current scheme.

What income is needed for a full waiver?

There is no single figure. Each IIM sets its own limits, and they can be tiered by category and by award. IIM Nagpur's need-cum-merit scheme lists family income under Rs 8 lakh, but another IIM may differ. Take the limit from your IIM's own page.

Is there a scholarship for toppers?

Some IIMs have merit awards. IIM Nagpur lists one for the top ten CAT scorers at 95 percentile or above, and IIM Amritsar gives a year's tuition to top-CGPA students each year. Conditions and renewal differ, so check them before counting on one.

Can I get a scholarship and a loan?

Generally yes, and aid lowers the loan you need. Some government interest-subsidy schemes exclude students who are eligible for another government scholarship or interest subsidy, so read each scheme's rules. Ask the IIM how a waiver is adjusted so that your lender disburses the right amount.

Do new IIMs have scholarships?

Several newer IIMs publish schemes, including IIM Nagpur, Amritsar, Kashipur, Tiruchirappalli and Ranchi, and some state how many awards they give. Others say details are shared after admission. The size of the scheme is not tied to the age of the IIM.
