- The total cost of an MBA in India is the total programme fee, plus costs the fee does not cover, plus the salary you give up while studying.
- Colleges define the programme fee differently. Some include basic hostel, others charge hostel and mess separately, so compare what is inside each figure.
- For a working professional, income lost can be larger than the fee. In the example below it is about 75 percent of the cost at a low-fee government college.
- A one-year programme halves the income lost, but its fee can still be close to a two-year college's.
The total cost of MBA in India has three parts: the total programme fee, the costs the fee does not cover, and the salary you give up for the length of the course. Most pages quote only the first, and the third is often the largest if you are working.
This post separates the three. It uses the total programme fee from our college table, shows the same 24 months for a two-year IIM, a government college and a one-year programme, and leaves the living-cost and salary inputs to you, with labelled assumptions.
Tuition, hostel, mess, exam and other charges
A college bill has more lines than tuition. IIM Udaipur's 2027-29 fee page is a good example, because it lists every head. Adding its published lines gives about Rs 23.03 lakh over six terms.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition, six terms (including Rs 1 lakh paid at offer acceptance) | Rs 21.00 lakh |
| Hostel (Rs 26,250 a term in year 1, Rs 27,000 in year 2) | Rs 1.60 lakh |
| Mess (Rs 3,000 a term) | Rs 0.18 lakh |
| Refundable caution deposit | Rs 0.20 lakh |
| Alumni association fee | Rs 0.05 lakh |
| Total, about | Rs 23.03 lakh |
The point is the structure. Roughly Rs 2 lakh sits outside tuition here, and the deposit comes back at the end.
Total programme fee in our table: what it includes
In our MBA fees and placements table, total programme fee means the full fee a college publishes for the whole course, in rupees lakh, for the batch shown. It is not tuition alone. IIM Lucknow's Rs 20.75 lakh, for example, adds an admission fee, tuition, infrastructure charges, refundable deposits and an alumni fee, and its mess charges are extra on actuals.
Colleges differ on what is inside. SPJIMR's fee includes tuition and basic hostel. XIM Bhubaneswar's fee page excludes hostel, and lists a single non-AC room at Rs 60,000 a year. IIM Mumbai's Rs 25 lakh excludes mess charges and the mess deposit. A gap of a few lakh between two colleges can be a definition gap, so always check the batch and what is included.
Living cost: city and hostel assumptions
Living cost is your input. Start from the hostel and mess lines in the fee schedule, then add what the fee does not cover: travel home, books, phone, laundry and personal spending. If you live off campus, add rent and meals for a full year.
For the example below, assume Rs 1.5 lakh a year for costs outside the fee. This is an illustration, and your number will depend on the city and your habits.
Income lost: the cost most pages skip
If you leave a job for a full-time course, the salary you would have earned is a real cost. The calculation is pre-tax salary multiplied by the months studied, divided by 12. It ignores raises you would have had, so treat it as a floor.
A fresher with no job loses nothing here. A professional on Rs 8 lakh a year gives up Rs 16 lakh over 24 months, which is more than the fee at many colleges.
Total cost of MBA in India: IIM, government and mid-tier private
The table assumes a current salary of Rs 8 lakh a year and Rs 1.5 lakh a year of costs outside the fee. Fees are total programme fees from our table, with the batch shown.
| Programme | Months | Total programme fee | Outside-fee costs | Income lost | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Lucknow | 24 | Rs 20.75 lakh (2026-28) | Rs 3.0 lakh | Rs 16.0 lakh | Rs 39.75 lakh |
| IMT Ghaziabad | 24 | Rs 22.85 lakh (2026-28) | Rs 3.0 lakh | Rs 16.0 lakh | Rs 41.85 lakh |
| FMS Delhi | 24 | Rs 2.43 lakh (2026-28) | Rs 3.0 lakh | Rs 16.0 lakh | Rs 21.43 lakh |
| Great Lakes Chennai PGPM, 1-year | 12 | Rs 19.25 lakh (2027-28) | Rs 1.5 lakh | Rs 8.0 lakh | Rs 28.75 lakh |
At FMS Delhi, income lost is about 75 percent of the total. At IIM Lucknow, it is about 40 percent. The fee is the biggest line mainly for freshers. A college with a low fee can still be expensive for a working professional.
One-year versus two-year programmes
A one-year programme halves the months and the income lost. It does not halve the fee. In the table, the one-year Great Lakes programme costs Rs 19.25 lakh in fee, not far from a two-year private college's, so the saving comes from the salary you keep.
Check the entry rules too. A one-year programme is usually aimed at people with work experience, and our MBA eligibility page lists them by college.
Timing of fee payments and deposits
Cash flow matters as much as the total. IIM Udaipur takes Rs 1 lakh at offer acceptance, adjusted against Term I, and bills the rest term by term. IIM Calcutta's 2024-26 page also takes Rs 1 lakh at acceptance and lists the terms at Rs 5.40 lakh and Rs 4.05 lakh.
Several colleges say their published fee is indicative and can be revised. FMS Delhi's page says the University of Delhi can revise fees at any time, and SPJIMR calls its figure indicative and subject to revision. Keep a margin.
Using the ROI calculator with your own numbers
The MBA ROI calculator adds the fee, the salary given up and any loan interest, then divides by the extra pay per year after the MBA to estimate payback. Enter your own salary and a lower post-MBA figure as well. The best MBA ROI in India page shows the same sums by college.
