- An MBA in operations management leads to five job families: planning, procurement, logistics, plant operations and projects.
- Operations is a small slice of placements at most top IIMs (3 percent at IIM Lucknow in 2024-26, 4.5 percent at IIM Kozhikode in 2023-25) but a large one where manufacturers recruit, such as IIM Mumbai at 16 percent and IIT Kharagpur at 20 percent.
- No placement report we hold gives an operations-only salary, so use the college's overall average and its manufacturing share.
- Operations plus analytics is a common pairing. Check how a college groups the two before you read its split.
An MBA in operations management trains you to run the physical and process side of a business: what to make, buy, move and store, and how to do it at lower cost and higher quality. The work is less visible than marketing or finance, and so are the placement numbers, so you need to read them with care.
This post lists the job families, shows where operations graduates get hired, compares reported operations and manufacturing shares across colleges, and explains why salary quotes online disagree. Figures are from official placement reports and college pages checked on 6 November 2026.
What job families does an MBA in operations management cover?
- Planning: demand forecasting, inventory and sales and operations planning. Heavy on Excel and forecasting.
- Procurement and sourcing: supplier selection, negotiation, contracts and cost reduction.
- Logistics and distribution: transport networks, warehousing, last-mile delivery and service levels.
- Plant and process operations: production, quality, maintenance and lean improvement on a shop floor.
- Projects and programmes: capacity expansion, new plant or system roll-outs, and process redesign.
The five differ in where you work and how you are measured. Planning and procurement are desk jobs with heavy data work. Plant roles mean shift schedules and site postings. Ask which family a college's recent batch joined before you pick it.
Where do operations MBAs get hired?
Three kinds of employer account for most operations hiring: manufacturers and process companies, e-commerce and logistics firms, and consulting or advisory firms with operations practices.
The college decides which of these you see. SIOM Nashik reports manufacturing at 36.4 percent of its 2024-26 placements and logistics at 2.1 percent (interim report, January 2026). IIM Mumbai reports manufacturing and process at 16 percent, e-commerce and retail at 7 percent and pharma at 6 percent. At IIM Nagpur, e-commerce and logistics was 1.8 percent against manufacturing at 16.9 percent.
What do placement reports show for operations and manufacturing?
Reports use different labels, so compare the lines with care. A bundled line such as IIM Rohtak's PM, IT and Operations (13 percent) cannot be read as pure operations.
| College | Line as named in the report | Share | Batch | Reported average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Lucknow | Operations | 3 percent | 2024-26 | 33.2 LPA |
| IIM Kozhikode | Operations | 4.5 percent | 2023-25 | 28.18 LPA |
| IIT Madras | Operations | 7 percent | 2024-26 | 18.3 LPA |
| IIT Delhi | Operations and Supply Chain | 7.69 percent | 2023-25 | 22.5 LPA |
| IIM Sambalpur | Operations and SC Management | 10 percent | 2024-26 | not stated (median 13) |
| IIM Mumbai | Manufacturing / Process | 16 percent | 2024-26 | 31.4 LPA |
| IIM Nagpur | Manufacturing | 16.9 percent | 2024-26 | 18.08 LPA |
| IIM Ranchi | Manufacturing | 17.93 percent | 2024-26 | 19.26 LPA |
| IIM Bodh Gaya | Manufacturing and SC | 19.8 percent | 2024-26 | 14.8 LPA |
| IIT Kharagpur | Operations | 20 percent | 2023-25 | 22.75 LPA |
| SIOM Nashik | Manufacturing | 36.4 percent | 2024-26 (interim) | 15.59 LPA |
Two readings follow. First, a small operations share does not mean low pay: IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozhikode have averages above 28 LPA with operations at 3 and 4.5 percent. Second, a large operations share does not guarantee high pay: IIM Bodh Gaya (19.8 percent) averages 14.8 LPA and SIOM (36.4 percent) averages 15.59 LPA. The employer mix and the college matter at least as much as the function.
Which skills help in operations?
- Analytics: forecasting, SQL and Excel modelling. Planning and logistics roles use them daily.
- ERP familiarity: knowing how planning, purchasing and inventory sit in a system such as SAP lets you move faster in your first year.
- Lean and Six Sigma: process mapping, waste reduction and quality methods. NMIMS Bengaluru lists Six Sigma and Project Management as compulsory workshops, which shows how routine these tools are.
- Negotiation and vendor handling: procurement and logistics both turn on supplier relationships.
The operations resume guide says recruiters look for the scale of what you ran (units, vendors, spend) and before-and-after changes in cost, cycle time or quality. Start collecting those numbers now.
Why do operations salary quotes disagree?
Online pages quote operations salaries that sit far apart, and they usually come from aggregators and forum answers without a college or batch. We do not repeat them. Our files hold no operations-only pay for any college, so the honest comparison is the whole-batch average and the manufacturing share.
The spread inside one batch can also be wide. SIOM's interim January 2026 report shows a batch average of 15.59 LPA, while the average of its top 10 percent was 29.91 LPA. A function-level number that hides this spread hides most of what you need to know.
Which colleges are strongest for operations placements?
Strong here means a large reported share of operations or manufacturing roles, not a rank. From the table above, the colleges with the largest shares in our data are SIOM Nashik, IIT Kharagpur, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Ranchi, IIM Nagpur and IIM Mumbai.
IIM Mumbai, formerly NITIE and founded in 1963, runs an MBA (Operations and Supply Chain Management) next to its MBA and MBA (Sustainability Management). SIOM Nashik is an operations-focused school whose MBA is open to engineering graduates only (BE or B.Tech with 50 percent) and admits through SNAP. Check the IIM Mumbai page for its latest report, and use the MBA Predictor to test your own score.
Should you pair operations with analytics?
Many programmes make this easy: NMIMS Navi Mumbai groups Operations and Data Sciences, and IIM Bodh Gaya puts Business Data Analytics in its first-year core. Reports often treat the two as neighbours, and the placement lines suggest why. IIM Kozhikode shows operations at 4.5 percent and IT and Analytics at 13.5 percent, while IIT Kharagpur shows operations at 20 percent and analytics at 15 percent.
If your target college recruits more for analytics than operations, an operations specialisation with strong analytics electives keeps both doors open.
Who does an operations MBA suit?
It suits people who like fixing processes, are comfortable with data and with site visits, and want a route into manufacturing, supply chain or e-commerce operations. It suits you less if you want a desk-based, client-facing role. Engineering is not a general requirement: SIOM asks for it, while IIM Mumbai's MBA lists a bachelor's degree with a minimum percentage. Check the rule for the specific programme.
