- An MBA in healthcare management leads to three routes: hospital operations, pharma and life sciences, and health-tech or consulting.
- Healthcare is a small share of general-MBA placements. Of the reports we hold with a sector split, seven list a healthcare or pharma line, and the largest is 6 percent (IIM Mumbai, pharma, 2024-26).
- No placement report we hold covers a healthcare-specialised MBA on its own, and we do not claim that it pays more than a general MBA.
- Doctors, pharmacists and engineers can all apply. Programme rules on work experience and entrance tests differ, so read each page.
An MBA in healthcare management prepares you to manage the business side of hospitals, pharma and life-sciences firms, and health-tech companies. It is a useful degree if you want that sector and can reach a programme with real recruiters, but the public evidence on pay and placements is thin.
This post separates the three routes, says who the degree suits, lists programmes in our data, shows what placement reports say, and gives a method for checking a programme. Facts were checked on 6 November 2026.
What are the three routes in an MBA in healthcare management?
- Hospital and provider operations: running departments, patient flow, billing, supply and facilities in hospital chains and standalone hospitals. Operations and administration roles dominate.
- Pharma and life sciences: brand and market-access roles, supply chain, sales and distribution at pharmaceutical, medical-device and diagnostics companies.
- Health-tech and consulting: product, operations and strategy roles at health-tech startups, and healthcare practices at consulting and advisory firms.
The three need different skills and different recruiters. Ask a programme which one most of its recent graduates joined.
Who is it for: doctors, pharmacists, engineers and others?
Doctors and pharmacists come with domain knowledge that hospitals and pharma firms value, and an MBA adds management, finance and operations skills. Engineers and graduates from other fields can enter the sector through operations, analytics or sales roles.
Some admission processes give credit for a professional background. IIM Sirmaur's admission composite, as listed on its page, adds 5 points for candidates with engineering, medical, architecture, pharmacy or CA, CMA or CS qualifications. Most other general MBAs ask for a bachelor's degree with a minimum percentage, so check how your own degree is treated.
Which colleges offer it: specialised programme or general MBA?
Our data shows three structures. Names and rules change, so use this as a starting list and read each college page.
| College | Healthcare link in our data | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Jammu | Offers an MBA in Healthcare Management with AIIMS Jammu and IIT Jammu | Separate healthcare programme |
| Goa Institute of Management | PGDM (Healthcare Management) | Separate PGDM next to the flagship PGDM |
| K J Somaiya (KJSIM) | Domain MBAs in Healthcare, Sports and Marketing Communications | Domain MBA next to the core MBA |
| DYPIMS Pune | Pharma and Healthcare Management, one of seven specialisations | Specialisation inside the MBA |
| ISB | Healthcare is one of four industry areas for electives and concentrations | One-year MBA with a healthcare focus option |
Other well-known health-management institutes exist. We do not hold their fees, eligibility or placement data, so use each institute's own page for those.
What do placement reports show for pharma and healthcare?
Seven reports we hold list a healthcare or pharma line. They cover whole classes at general programmes, so they describe how much of a college's hiring is in the sector, not what a healthcare MBA earns.
| College | Line as named in the report | Share | Batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMT Ghaziabad | Healthcare and Pharma | 2 percent | 2024-26 |
| SIBM Bengaluru | Pharmaceutical and Healthcare (share of companies) | 2.07 percent | 2023-25 |
| MDI Gurgaon | Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare | 2.3 percent | 2024-26 |
| IIM Bangalore | Healthcare and Education | 3 percent | 2024-26 |
| Great Lakes Chennai (one-year PGPM) | Healthcare | 4 percent | 2025-26 |
| Goa Institute of Management | Healthcare | 4.55 percent | 2024-26 |
| IIM Mumbai | Pharma | 6 percent | 2024-26 |
Read this as the range for general MBAs: even the largest line is 6 percent. A specialised programme may place more students in the sector, but our files hold no report for one, so we cannot say how many.
What is and is not published about healthcare MBA pay?
Pages that list healthcare MBA colleges give dated fees and no placement statistics. We hold none either. What exists is whole-college pay: for example, Goa Institute of Management's 2024-26 batch averaged 16.27 LPA with a median of 15 LPA, and healthcare was 4.55 percent of its placements.
How do you get in: CAT, ATMA and institute tests?
Routes differ by programme, so check the page of each one.
- IIM Jammu's general MBA admits through CAT. Check the healthcare programme page for its own route.
- Goa Institute of Management accepts XAT 2027, CAT 2026 and GMAT (taken between 1 January 2025 and 15 January 2027).
- K J Somaiya lists CAT 2026, XAT 2027, GMAT, NMAT and CMAT 2027.
- DYPIMS Pune lists MAH-MBA-CET, CAT and CMAT.
- ISB uses GMAT or GRE and asks for work experience.
- Some specialised institutes use other national tests, such as ATMA, or their own tests. We hold no dates for them, so check the institute.
Use the MBA Predictor for CAT-based estimates, and our eligibility page for the basics. Dates move, so confirm each on the official page.
What experience do programmes ask for?
Our data shows a range. ISB asks for at least 24 months of full-time experience. Goa Institute of Management scores work experience but states no minimum. K J Somaiya has a merit route and a profile route that uses full-time paid experience. IIM Jammu scores experience but does not require it.
For specialised healthcare programmes, the rule may differ from the college's general MBA. We do not hold those rules, so check the specific programme page, especially if you are a doctor in training or have just finished an internship year.
How do you check a programme before applying?
- Ask for the programme-wise placement report with roles, employers and pay, not a college-wide average.
- Check which of the three routes (hospital, pharma, health-tech or consulting) recent graduates joined.
- Look at the faculty and the live projects: do they involve hospitals or pharma firms?
- Check approval and recognition of the degree or diploma on the institute's official page.
- Compare fee with reported pay using our MBA ROI page, and compare with a general MBA at a stronger college.
