Government vs Private MBA Colleges in India: A Fee-and-Outcome Check

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 6 min read

In short
  • In our table of 98 programmes, government ones have a higher median fee (Rs 19.38 lakh, 34 programmes) than private ones (Rs 16.73 lakh, 58), because all 21 IIMs are government.
  • At the same fee band, government programmes show higher median average packages: Rs 12.5 vs 7.21 lakh under Rs 10 lakh, Rs 19.65 vs 10.93 lakh at Rs 10 to 20 lakh, and Rs 27.15 vs 17.08 lakh above Rs 20 lakh.
  • Fee divided by average package has a median of 0.80 for government programmes and 1.32 for private ones.
  • A few private programmes match the best government outcomes, and a costly, low-package middle exists in both groups, more among private ones.
  • These findings describe our table, not every MBA college in India.

Government vs private MBA colleges is not a simple cost contest. In our verified table, government programmes have the higher median fee, because every IIM is government, yet at the same fee band they show the higher median average package.

This guide compares the two groups using our programme table: ownership, total fee, average package and cutoff estimate, with the count of programmes behind each figure. It covers 98 full-time programmes, updated on 6 Nov 2026, and it does not cover every MBA college in India.

How are government and private defined here?

We use the ownership field in our table. Government includes the IIMs and IITs plus public institutes such as FMS Delhi, JBIMS, IIFT, BHU FMS, Panjab University UBS and SIMSREE. Private includes ISB, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI, NMIMS, SIBM, MICA and many others.

Ownership is not the same as brand tier. We also use our table's label for top-tier private schools to show how far they differ from the rest. We count programmes, not institutions, so XLRI appears twice (BM and HRM) and NMIMS across several campuses. The three IIM Mumbai executive programmes are excluded, and only fields marked verified are used.

What does our data say about fees by ownership?

GroupProgrammesVerified feesFee range (lakh)Median fee (lakh)
Government, all36340.48 to 27.519.38
Government: IIMs212117.9 to 27.521

Private: top tier111021.56 to 30.526.01
Private: other51482.95 to 24.0316

The generalisation that government colleges are cheaper breaks on the IIMs, which are government and the costliest government group. Outside the IIMs and IITs, public institutes have a median fee of Rs 2.43 lakh.

How do packages compare by ownership and tier?

GroupVerified averagesAverage package range (lakh)Median of averages (lakh)

Private: top tier1114.3 to 37.2928.18
Private: other454.5 to 18.111.22

Batch years vary between programmes, so these are rough guides. Notice the split inside the private group: the top-tier median of Rs 28.18 lakh is more than twice that of the other private programmes.

Where do government colleges win?

They win on cost for outcome. Fee divided by average package has a median of 0.80 across 31 government programmes and 1.32 across 54 private ones. A ratio of 1.0 means the fee equals one year of the average package. The ratio ignores tax, hostel, interest and salary forgone, but it is the same for both groups.

Fee bandGovernment: programmes, median average (lakh)Private: programmes, median average (lakh)

Rs 10 to 20 lakh10, 19.6526, 10.93
Rs 20 lakh and above14, 27.1522, 17.08

Examples include FMS Delhi (fee Rs 2.43 lakh, average Rs 32.27 lakh), JBIMS (Rs 8.33 lakh, Rs 26.67 lakh) and IIT Delhi's DMS (Rs 12 lakh, Rs 22.52 lakh).

Where do private colleges win?

A handful of private programmes match or beat many government ones. SPJIMR's average of Rs 33.6 lakh (2024-26) is above IIM Lucknow's Rs 33.2 lakh, and XLRI (31.4), MDI (29.5) and SIBM Pune (28.18) sit in the same range. ISB reports Rs 37.29 lakh (2025-26), but its fee is not marked verified in our table, so it is left out of the fee statistics.

Private colleges also offer more routes in. Of 62 private programmes, 31 accept CAT, 26 accept XAT, 18 CMAT, 8 SNAP and 6 each GMAT and MAT. Of 36 government programmes, 34 accept CAT.

What is the weak middle of costly colleges with low packages?

Take programmes with a verified fee of Rs 20 lakh or more and a verified average package. In the private group, 7 of 22 report an average below Rs 15 lakh. In the government group, 2 of 14 do. The private ones include four NMIMS campuses, K J Somaiya, SIBM Bengaluru and TAPMI, and the government ones are IIM Sirmaur (Rs 13.3 lakh) and IIM Kashipur (Rs 14.95 lakh).

So the weak middle exists in both groups, more often among private programmes. Branch campuses of a well-known name can report different packages from the flagship, so compare each campus.

How do exams and entry difficulty differ?

Government programmes lean on CAT, with 34 of 36 accepting it and 3 using the Maharashtra MBA/MMS CET. Our cutoff estimates for them have a median of 95 percentile across 34 programmes. Only 31 of 62 private programmes have a CAT-based estimate, because the rest use XAT, SNAP, NMAT, CMAT or the CET, and their median is 80.

These are modelled estimates, not official cutoffs. The calendar matters too: CAT 2026 is on 29 Nov 2026, XAT on 3 Jan 2027 and SNAP tests on 13, 19 and 26 Dec 2026. Use the MBA Predictor for your own score.

A decision checklist for government vs private MBA colleges

  1. Estimate your percentile and note which exams you can still sit.
  2. List the total fee, then add hostel, living costs and any salary you give up.
  3. Read the verified average and median package with the batch year.
  4. Divide fee by average package, and compare it with colleges in the same fee band.
  5. Check specialisation, location and any work-experience rule.
  6. Run your own numbers in the ROI calculator, and compare more colleges on the fees and placements page.
FAQ

Common questions

Are government MBA colleges better than private?

Not as a rule. In our table of 98 programmes, government programmes show a higher median average package at every fee band, but some private ones, such as SPJIMR and XLRI, match top government programmes, and some government IIMs report averages below Rs 15 lakh. Judge each college on fee, package and fit.

Are IIMs government or private?

IIMs are government institutes. In our table all 21 IIM programmes are classed as government, and they are the costliest government group, with total fees from Rs 17.9 lakh to Rs 27.5 lakh and a median of Rs 21 lakh. That is why government colleges are not cheaper as a group.

Do private MBAs have better placements?

On our data, not as a group. Private programmes have a median average package of Rs 12.5 lakh against Rs 19.27 lakh for government ones. The top tier of private schools is the exception, with a median of Rs 28.18 lakh across 11 programmes. Compare colleges one by one, with batch years.

Is a private MBA worth 20 lakh?

It depends on the college. Among 22 private programmes costing Rs 20 lakh or more with a verified package, averages range from Rs 11.3 lakh to Rs 33.6 lakh, and fee divided by average package runs from 0.74 to 1.83. At the high end, the fee equals almost two years of the average package.

Which is cheaper: PGDM or university MBA?

The label does not decide it. Programmes named PGDM or PGPM in our table have a median fee of Rs 16.5 lakh (27 programmes), and those named MBA or MMS, excluding IIMs, Rs 15.83 lakh (44 with a verified fee). Ownership and tier matter more, so compare each college's fee and package.
