XAT vs CAT: Which Exam Deserves Your Time First?

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 6 min read

In short
  • In XAT vs CAT, the calendar decides the order. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026 and XAT 2027 is on 3 January 2027, 35 days later.
  • CAT 2026 registration closed on 22 September 2026. XAT registration is open until 6 December 2026.
  • The two exams share most of the preparation. XAT adds Decision Making and a GK part that only XLRI uses.
  • Marking differs: CAT MCQs are +3 / -1 with strict 40-minute sections, while XAT is +1 / -0.25 with one overall clock and a skip rule.
  • Pick by target college. IIMs need CAT, XLRI needs XAT, and many other colleges accept either.

In XAT vs CAT, the order is set by the calendar before it is set by difficulty. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026 and XAT 2027 is on 3 January 2027, so the two exams are 35 days apart, and most of the preparation carries from one to the other. If you are registered for CAT, keep CAT as the priority until 29 November and add XAT-specific work in small doses.

Dates and rules here were checked on 6 November 2026. CAT 2026 registration is closed, while XAT registration closes on 6 December 2026, so for anyone not yet registered for CAT the XAT window is the one still open.

XAT vs CAT: what each exam opens

CAT 2026 is a prerequisite for admission to the programmes of the 22 IIMs listed in its bulletin. Listed non-IIM institutions may also use the score. The score is valid until 31 December 2027.

XAT is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for XAMI, and its bulletin says the score is recognised by over 250 institutes. XLRI's business management and HRM programmes take applicants through XAT 2027, or through GMAT for NRI, PIO, OCI and foreign candidates. Each institute sets its own weights and process, so a recognised score is not a guaranteed call.

Many colleges accept either exam. XIM Bhubaneswar, MICA and FORE School of Management list both CAT and XAT among accepted scores on their pages, though each has its own process. Check the college's page for the exams it takes.

How the patterns differ: Decision Making, GK and the clock

CAT 2026XAT 2027
Exam daySunday, 29 November 2026, three sessionsSunday, 3 January 2027, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Duration120 minutes180 minutes: 170 for Part 1, then a separate 10-minute GK part
SectionsVARC, DILR, QAVA and LR, Decision Making, QA and DI, plus GK
Time limitsExactly 40 minutes per section, no switchingOverall limit only, no sectional limits
QuestionsCount not published on the 2026 pagesAbout 95, including about 20 GK (approximate counts)
MarkingMCQ +3 / -1, non-MCQ no negative, skipped 0+1 / -0.25, up to 8 skips free, then -0.1 per skip

The GK part has no negative marking, is not counted in the percentile and is used only by XLRI. Decision Making has about 21 questions in the XAT pattern, which the bulletin gives as approximate.

The marking changes your guessing maths. A XAT guess beats a free skip when your chance of being right is above 20%, since the expected gain is 1.25p - 0.25. A CAT MCQ breaks even at 25%.

Why the two exams share most of the preparation

Reading, verbal logic, quant and data skills are common to both. If you have built a quant base and a reading habit for CAT, XAT does not ask you to start again.

  • Reusable: arithmetic, algebra, data interpretation, reading comprehension, logical reasoning.
  • New for XAT: Decision Making and the GK part, plus a 170-minute paper with no sectional clock.
  • Different habit: CAT trains you to leave a section when 40 minutes end. XAT asks you to decide where not to spend your own time.

The XAT 2027 exam page has the full pattern, and the college predictor shows how XAT percentiles map to colleges as estimates.

Watch out. The XAT pages we checked do not state how long a XAT score stays valid or whether there is an attempt limit. Confirm both on the official XAT site before you plan around them.

The gap between exam days and how to use it

From 6 November, CAT is 23 days away and XAT is 58 days away. After CAT you have 35 days to XAT, and registration closes a week after CAT on 6 December. Do not leave the XAT registration to the last weekend.

Those 35 days are enough to add Decision Making, GK and the longer paper if your CAT base is in place. They are not enough to build a quant base from nothing.

Difficulty is not one number

Published views disagree on which exam is harder, and neither exam body rates its own difficulty. The useful question is what changes for you.

  • If strict 40-minute sections squeeze you, XAT's single clock may feel kinder.
  • If free time allocation tempts you to over-invest in one section, CAT's fixed clock may suit you better.
  • If you have never practised ethics or management cases, Decision Making will cost you time at first.
  • If you handle negative marking well, XAT's smaller penalty rewards sensible guessing.

Take one full paper in each style before you decide how much extra time XAT needs.

A 35-day split between CAT and XAT

The 35 days between the exams are five weeks, not eight. This split follows the plan in our XAT guide.

DatesWhat to do
Now to 29 NovKeep your CAT routine. Add two Decision Making cases a day, about 20 minutes. Register for XAT before 6 December
30 Nov to 13 DecLearn the XAT section mix. Take one 170-minute full test a week and review it the next morning. Practise timed writing once a week
14 Dec to 2 JanTwo full tests a week with a 10-minute GK drill at the end. Admit card is expected from 20 December (tentative). Keep the last two days for light revision
Tip. Read the XAT bulletin for any written-ability component and how colleges use it. It is not covered in the sources checked here.
FAQ

Common questions

Is XAT easier than CAT?

Sources disagree, and no exam body rates difficulty. The exams test different things: XAT adds Decision Making and a GK part, with one overall clock and -0.25 marking, while CAT runs three strict 40-minute sections. Which feels easier depends on how you handle those differences.

Can I get XLRI with a CAT score?

Not through CAT. XLRI's admission page, as checked in November 2026, says registration is through XAT 2027, or GMAT for NRI, PIO, OCI and foreign candidates. Many other colleges accept either exam, so check each college's page for the exams it takes.

Should I give both CAT and XAT?

It can be practical, since the preparation overlaps and the exams are 35 days apart. XAT registration closes on 6 December 2026, and the fee is Rs 2,300 plus Rs 200 per XLRI programme. Decide from your target colleges and from how you perform in full mocks.

Is Decision Making hard to prepare?

It is unfamiliar rather than impossible. There are no formulas, so progress comes from practising cases, reviewing why options fail and building a repeatable method. About 21 questions are expected in the XAT pattern, so regular practice over several weeks is a sensible start.

How many colleges accept XAT?

The XAT bulletin says the score is recognised by over 250 institutes, including XLRI and XAMI members and associates. Each institute sets its own weights and process, so recognition does not mean admission on score alone. Check each college's page for how it uses XAT.
