- An online MBA is valid for most purposes only if the university is entitled by UGC-DEB to offer that programme in that session. Check the UGC-DEB website before you pay.
- In our records of eight online MBAs (checked 3 November 2026), listed fees run from 1.6 lakh (VIT) to 2.07 lakh (Amity). Two-year IIMs charge 17.9 to 27.5 lakh. Extras such as exam fees and GST can add to a listed fee.
- Placement for online MBAs is 'support only' or not stated. Full-time programmes run campus placement and publish reports.
- Sources differ on whether AICTE approval is also needed for an online MBA, so check both UGC-DEB and AICTE.
In an online MBA vs full-time MBA comparison, the online degree costs a small fraction of the fee and keeps you in your job, but it gives you no campus recruitment. It is valid for most purposes only when the university holds a UGC-DEB entitlement for that programme in that session.
This post shows the recognition check step by step, compares fees using our data on online and part-time programmes (checked 3 November 2026), explains what 'placement support' means and ends with red flags. For people with two or more years of work experience, one online-with-campus option is covered near the end.
What is an online MBA and who awards it?
An online MBA is awarded by a university that is allowed to teach in online mode. Classes are live or recorded, exams are online or at centres, and campus time is limited or absent. The university awards the degree, so recognition depends on the university and the programme.
| Online MBA | Full-time MBA | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | No entrance test listed at most of the eight we track. Amity asks for a test only if graduation marks are below 40 percent | An exam such as CAT, XAT, NMAT or SNAP, then group and personal interviews |
| Duration | 24 months, alongside a job | Usually 24 months on campus |
| Fee | 1.6 to 2.07 lakh listed | 17.9 to 27.5 lakh at the two-year IIMs |
| Placement | Support only, or not stated | Campus placement with a published report |
The UGC-DEB check: how to do it in five minutes
- Note the exact university name and programme from the admission page, for example 'MBA (Online)'.
- Open the UGC-DEB website (deb.ugc.ac.in) and find the list of institutions entitled to offer online programmes for the current session.
- Check that the university is listed for online mode and for the MBA itself. An entry for one programme does not cover all of them.
- Note the session and keep a dated screenshot or the notice reference.
- Check that the university's own page says 'UGC entitled' and ask for the entitlement letter.
The institutes in our records state UGC entitlement on their pages. Treat these as their own statements and verify each on UGC-DEB.
AICTE: when it is and is not relevant
AICTE regulates technical and management education and its approval matters for on-campus PGDM programmes. For online MBAs, sources disagree on whether it is also needed. Some institutes state AICTE approval on their pages: LPU, SRM, VIT and Amrita do in our records. Others state UGC entitlement only.
Fees: our data on eight online MBAs
| Programme | Listed fee (lakh) | Work experience asked | Placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIT Online MBA | 1.6 | None stated | Not stated |
| JAIN Online MBA (General Management) | 1.685 | None stated | Support only |
| UPES Online MBA | 1.75 (a starting figure) | None stated | Support only |
| Amrita Online MBA | 1.877 | None stated | Support only |
| SRM Online MBA | 1.89, plus GST | None stated | Institute's own claim, not checked |
| NMIMS CDOE MBA (Online) | 1.96 | None stated | Support only |
| LPU Online MBA | 2.0 | None stated | Support only |
| Amity University Online | 2.07 | None stated | Institute's own claim, not checked |
These are listed fees checked on 3 November 2026. Extras differ: NMIMS CDOE's 1.96 lakh single payment rises to 2.10 or 2.20 lakh on instalments, and JAIN adds registration and exam fees. Ask for the full fee schedule in writing.
Part-time programmes for people with experience cost more: NMIMS MBA (Working Executive) is 4.0 lakh and needs at least three years of work experience. BITS Pilani's work-integrated MBA in Finance is 3.124 lakh and requires you to be employed.
Placements: what does 'support' mean?
Five of the eight say only that placement support is available, VIT says nothing, and Amity and SRM make claims that we have not checked: '100% Placement Assistance' at Amity, and 'up to 3 job interview opportunities' at SRM, at extra cost.
Support can mean resume help, a job portal and webinars, and sometimes interview opportunities. It does not mean recruiters visit and hire a cohort. Assistance is not an offer.
A full-time college publishes its results. IIM Lucknow's report shows an average package of 33.2 LPA for 2024-26. No comparable published outcome is in our records for the online programmes.
Network, peers and brand: the real difference
A full-time cohort is selected by an exam, studies together and is recruited together. An online cohort is made of working adults from varied backgrounds who study alongside jobs. The brand signal and the recruiting pipeline come mostly from the full-time route.
The value of an online MBA sits in the credential and in applying what you learn at your current job. If the aim is a different industry, the missing pipeline matters more than the lower fee.
Online MBA vs full-time MBA: who should pick which
- Online fits when you work, want a credential for a promotion in the same field, need low cost or cannot relocate.
- Full-time fits when you want to switch field, want campus placement, or can get into a good college. The MBA Predictor shows where your score could land.
- With two or more years of relevant full-time work, IIT Jodhpur's Executive MBA (Technology) is an online programme with two campus immersions of 5 to 7 days. It costs 9.15 lakh, uses its own test (15 November 2026) and no CAT, and starts on 1 January 2027 (checked 3 November 2026). Immersions, test fee and accommodation are extra. See MBA without CAT.
Red flags before you pay
- The university cannot show UGC-DEB entitlement for this session.
- A promise of placement, or '100% placement', with no report behind it.
- A fee quoted without exam, registration and tax.
- Pressure to pay today to keep a discount.
- 'AICTE and UGC approved' claims with no letter to show.
