MBA in India vs MS Abroad After Engineering

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 7 min read

In short
  • An MBA leads to management, consulting, finance and product roles. An MS deepens a technical field and mostly leads to engineering, data and research roles. Choose by the job, not the degree.
  • Indian MBA fees in our table run from under 3 lakh at some government schools (FMS Delhi: 2.43 lakh) to 30.5 lakh at XLRI Jamshedpur. MS abroad cost varies by country, university and living costs, so build your own estimate from the university's cost page.
  • Placement packages cover students who sat for placement and are not promises. Visa and work rights after an MS change with policy, so check the government page on the day you decide.
  • Use the payback worksheet below for both options. The college you land in changes the answer more than the type of degree.

MBA in India vs MS abroad is a choice between two different jobs more than two degrees. An MBA prepares you to manage, advise and run products. An MS takes you deeper into a technical field and mostly leads to engineering, data and research roles.

This post compares the two on cost, earnings, visa risk and how each is valued when you return. Indian MBA numbers come from our verified fee and placement table, checked 6 November 2026. MS costs, salaries and visa rules are not in our data and change by country and year, so the post shows you how to build those inputs from official pages rather than quoting ranges.

MBA in India vs MS abroad: two different jobs

Engineers are common in Indian MBA classes. Class profiles in our records show 67 percent engineers at IIM Bangalore (2026-28), about 61 percent at IIM Ahmedabad (2026-28) and 71 percent at IIM Mumbai (2024-26). Choosing an MBA after engineering is not unusual.

Cost side: what an Indian MBA costs

These are total fees, including compulsory fees but not hostel, from our table checked 6 November 2026.

GroupExamplesTotal fee
Two-year IIMsIIM Rohtak to IIM Ahmedabad17.9 to 27.5 lakh
IIT management schoolsIIT Kharagpur to IIT Bombay11.75 to 15.56 lakh
Low-fee governmentFMS Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai2.43 lakh, 8.33 lakh
Private top tierXLRI Jamshedpur BM, SPJIMR Mumbai30.5 lakh, 24.86 lakh

Government and IIT programmes cost far less than private ones but are also more competitive. Add hostel and living costs to every row above, and the salary you give up if you study full-time.

MS abroad cost: how to build your own estimate

A typical MS cost is not quoted here because it differs widely between countries, between public and private universities and between cities. One average would mislead. Build your own from the university's own pages:

  1. Total tuition for the whole programme, for your intake year.
  2. Living cost for each year, from the university's published cost of attendance.
  3. One-time costs: visa fee, flights, health insurance and deposits.
  4. Funding you hold in writing, such as a scholarship or assistantship, subtracted.
  5. Loan interest during the study years, if you borrow.
  6. A buffer for exchange rates, because fees and rent are paid in foreign currency.
Watch out. Cost tables on agent and marketing pages rarely name a source or a year. Use only figures you can see on the university's own cost page, and note the date.

Earnings side: placement packages versus MS salary

Indian MBA packages are the average annual pay of the latest placed batch, before tax. They cover students who took part in placements.

ProgrammeTotal feeAverage packageMedianBatch
IIM Lucknow20.75 lakh33.2 LPA32.9 LPA2024-26
FMS Delhi2.43 lakh32.27 LPA29.59 LPA2025-26
IIM Indore24.12 lakh27.27 LPA25 LPA2024-26
IIT Delhi (DMS)12 lakh22.52 LPA22.5 LPA2025
IIM Raipur20.08 lakh20.7 LPA20.23 LPA2025-26
IIM Visakhapatnam23.59 lakh15 LPA14 LPA2025-26
K J Somaiya (SIMSR)23.78 lakh13.05 LPA12 LPA2024-26

For an MS, take the salary from the university's own graduate-outcomes report for your programme, and note how many graduates reported and in which year. Compare after rent and tax, not on the headline number, and do not use averages from agent pages.

Visa and work-rights risk for MS abroad

The money case for an MS often rests on being allowed to work after the degree. Work rights after study differ by country, change with policy and can depend on your field or a job offer. We do not quote the rules here because they change. Read the government immigration page of the country on the day you decide.

  • Plan for the case where you cannot stay and return to India with the degree.
  • Check whether your field of study or the type of job offer changes the work rights you get.
  • Re-check the rules before you accept an offer, not only when you apply.

An Indian MBA has no equivalent risk. Campus placement happens in India, with no visa step.

Return to India: how each degree is valued

An Indian MBA gives you campus recruitment at most programmes and a placement report you can read before you enrol. A returning MS holder is hired mostly on technical skill, work done abroad and the university's reputation, with no campus pipeline of the same kind.

The two can also be combined. A later MBA after an MS is possible, since the usual rule asks for a bachelor's degree with 50 percent marks. Check each college's rules on age, work experience and how long an exam score stays valid.

Who should choose which

  • Choose the MBA if the roles you want are consulting, finance, product, general management or sales and marketing, and a college you can realistically enter has a payback you accept.
  • Choose the MS if you want to stay technical, research or build, and you can fund it without a loan you cannot repay on a lower salary.
  • Work first if you are unsure. IIM batches average about two years of experience: 24 months at IIM Ahmedabad (2026-28), 27 months at IIM Bangalore (2026-28) and 22.6 months at IIM Calcutta (2024-26).

A payback worksheet for either option

  1. Total cost A = fees + living + one-time costs, minus funding.
  2. Income given up B = your current pay x years of full-time study (zero if you start straight after B.Tech).
  3. Pay after the degree C, and the pay you would have without it D.
  4. Payback in years = (A + B) / (C - D).
Example. An engineer with 2 years of experience earns 8 lakh a year and compares two Indian MBAs. (Pay is assumed for illustration. Ignores tax, raises and loan interest.)
  1. IIM Lucknow: cost = 20.75 lakh fee + 16 lakh pay given up = 36.75 lakh. Extra pay = 32.9 - 8 = 24.9 lakh a year. Payback = 36.75 / 24.9 = about 1.5 years.
  2. K J Somaiya: cost = 23.78 + 16 = 39.78 lakh. Extra pay = 12 - 8 = 4 lakh a year. Payback = 39.78 / 4 = about 9.9 years.

Answer: About 1.5 years against about 10 years. The college changes the result far more than the degree label.

Do the same sum for your MS inputs. The MBA ROI calculator does it for Indian programmes, with its own pay estimate, so its numbers differ slightly.

FAQ

Common questions

MBA or MS after B.Tech, which is better?

Neither in general. Choose by the job you want. An MBA fits management, consulting, finance and product roles, and an MS fits technical depth and research. Where both could work, compare payback with your own cost and salary inputs rather than relying on average figures from agents.

Is an Indian MBA cheaper than MS abroad?

It depends on the programme. Indian MBA fees in our table run from under 3 lakh at some government schools to 30.5 lakh at XLRI Jamshedpur, plus hostel and pay given up. MS cost depends on country, university, living costs and funding. Total both with the worksheet, including income you give up.

Can I do an MBA after an MS?

Yes. The usual rule is a bachelor's degree with 50 percent marks, and a later master's does not block it. Check each college's rules on age, work experience and how long an exam score stays valid. Returning from abroad, plan around the exam calendar, since CAT is held once a year.

Which has better ROI?

There is no general winner. Among the 85 full-time Indian programmes with verified fees and packages, the median payback for a professional with 2 years of experience on 8 lakh is about 5.1 years, and the fastest is FMS Delhi at about 0.8 years (6 November 2026). MS payback depends on your inputs.

Do I need work experience for an Indian MBA?

Most two-year programmes accept freshers and final-year students with 50 percent in graduation, and IIT management schools ask for 60 percent. ISB needs about two years. Even so, IIM batches average roughly two years of experience, so a year or two of work can help your profile.
