- For OBC-NCL and EWS, the issue date of the certificate matters as well as your category. Institutes name an earliest issue date, often a 1 April, and it changes by cycle. For CAT 2026, NC-OBC certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026.
- Your category is declared at CAT registration and cannot be changed afterwards. For CAT 2026 you upload the NC-OBC, EWS, SC or ST certificate with the application, and IIM Calcutta (2027-29) and IIM Lucknow (2026-28) ask for the original again at the interview. A pending fresh certificate has a narrow undertaking route.
- Category decides which cut-off you face: IIM Ahmedabad's lowest shortlisted percentile in 2026-28 was 95.34 for General and 90.66 for NC-OBC, a gap of about 4.7 points.
- If your certificate is older than the cut-off, apply for a fresh one now and ask the admissions office in writing what to submit meanwhile.
An OBC NCL certificate for MBA admission must meet the date rule in the admitting institute's notice, and that rule changes by institute and cycle. A certificate that proves your category can still be rejected if it was issued before the notice's earliest issue date, often a 1 April of a named year. EWS certificates face the same check, and they rest on family income and assets, not income alone.
This post is a checklist built on that date logic. The one date it can quote is the CAT 2026 rule, from the CAT 2026 information bulletin: NC-OBC certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026. Each IIM's own notice can add rules and dates. CAT 2026 is on 29 Nov 2026 and results are expected in the first week of January 2027, so check your certificates before the results arrive.
Where are category certificates checked?
- Registration: you declare your category and, for NC-OBC, EWS, SC or ST, upload the certificate. The CAT 2026 bulletin and FAQ set registration to close on 15 September 2026, and news reports of the IIM Indore notice say it was extended to 22 September. It is closed either way (checked 6 Nov 2026).
- Shortlist: category-wise percentile floors apply.
- Interview or offer: documents are verified again. IIM Calcutta's 2027-29 policy says a valid certificate under the central list is furnished during the personal interview, and FMS Delhi's 2027-29 bulletin says an OBC-NCL or EWS certificate must be valid at the interview and on the date of admission.
The shortlist step shows why the category matters. At IIM Ahmedabad in 2026-28, the lowest percentile shortlisted was 95.34 for General and 90.66 for NC-OBC, a gap of 4.68 percentile points. These are observed lowest values from IIM Ahmedabad's disclosure, not rules, and the IIM CAT cutoff page lists the full table.
OBC NCL certificate for MBA admission: why does the issue date matter?
Non-creamy-layer status depends on family circumstances at a point in time. A certificate says you qualified on the date it was issued, which is why institutes ask for a recent one. For CAT 2026, the information bulletin requires NC-OBC certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026.
List also matters. IIMs are central institutions and follow the central list of OBCs, so a certificate issued under a state list can fail if your community is not on the central list. The notice states the accepted format and wording.
EWS: why is it income and assets, not just income?
An EWS certificate is for candidates outside the SC, ST and OBC reservation, and it is issued in a prescribed format by the competent authority. It rests on family income and assets under the government's criteria. An income certificate shows only income, so it does not stand in for it unless the notice says so.
The limits are set in the government notification, and they can be revised. For CAT 2026, the CAT FAQ describes a valid EWS certificate as issued on or after 1 April 2026, valid for 2026-27, stating family gross annual income below Rs 8 lakh and no ownership of the listed land or property, and showing that the caste is not on the central SC, ST or OBC list. The bulletin adds that it is assessed on the financial year 2025-26. For any other cycle or institute, take the limits from that notice, not from a table that may be out of date.
What is the validity-date rule, and why does it change by cycle?
The rule is usually written as 'issued on or after' a date, often the first day of a financial year. The institute sets the date for its cycle, and it moves forward as years pass. Notices from different institutes and years have used different 1 April dates, so one example is not a rule for another.
- Compare the dates: 20 March 2026 is before 1 April 2026.
- The certificate predates the cut-off by 12 days, so it fails the rule as written.
- Action: apply for a new certificate. The CAT 2026 bulletin allows a pending-certificate route with an undertaking, so read it before you decide.
Answer: No. It must be reissued, unless the pending-certificate route applies to you.
What does an undertaking at application mean?
For CAT 2026, candidates who had applied for a fresh NC-OBC or EWS certificate but not yet received it could register by uploading, in one PDF, the undertaking from the CAT website, the older certificate issued before 1 April 2026, and the acknowledgement or screenshot showing the fresh application. The bulletin warns that an incomplete set may lead to disqualification from the entire admission process.
An undertaking is not a certificate. Keep a copy of what you submitted, and read the undertaking's own wording for what you must submit and by when, since we could not view its format. The MBA deadline tracker helps with application dates.
Which documents should you carry on interview day?
- Category certificate in the notice's format: OBC-NCL, EWS, SC or ST.
- PwD certificate, if you are claiming it.
- Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and graduation mark sheets.
- Photo ID and your CAT score card.
- Work experience letters, if you claim marks for them.
- Photocopies, in the number the call letter asks for.
The call letter is the final list. Follow it exactly, including whether originals are required. The MBA eligibility page covers the general rules.
What if your certificate is older than the cut-off date?
- Compare your issue date with the notice's date.
- Apply for a fresh certificate at once. Processing times differ by state and office.
- Keep the acknowledgement of your application.
- Email the admissions office and ask whether an acknowledgement is accepted until the new certificate arrives. Keep the reply.
- Submit the new certificate as soon as it is issued.
What is a sensible timeline before and after the CAT result?
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Now (checked 6 Nov 2026) | Find the latest notices of your target IIMs and note each date rule. Compare them with your certificate's issue date. |
| Before 29 Nov 2026 | If your certificate may be too old for an IIM's notice, apply for a fresh one. Scan every document. |
| December 2026 | Assemble one folder: certificates, marks sheets, ID, work letters. |
| First week of January 2027 | CAT results are expected. Re-read each notice for new date rules. |
| January to April 2027 | Shortlists and interviews. IIM Ahmedabad's tentative dates are a shortlist in January 2027 and offers from April 2027. |
Reservation percentages and seat splits are set in each IIM's notice for the cycle, so this post does not repeat them. Read the notice for yours.
