- Most IIM MBA policies in our records state no minimum work experience. Experience earns marks instead: 5 to 20 of 100 in the policies that state a final weight, while IIM Indore's shortlist adds only 0 to 3.
- The credit is built from months of full-time work, is capped, and in some policies peaks in a band (IIM Jammu, 2026-28: maximum 10 marks, peak at 24 to 36 months).
- Batches differ: IIM Bodh Gaya reported 76.25% freshers (2024-26), while IIM Ahmedabad's 2026-28 batch reports 24 months of average experience.
- Experience helps most in the interview. Freshers can build the same material from internships, projects and student roles.
Freshers vs work experience in IIM admission is less lopsided than batch averages suggest. Most IIM policies treat experience as a scored item worth a few capped marks, not a requirement, and some IIMs fill batches that are mostly freshers. Experience pays off mainly in the interview, where it gives you more to talk about.
This post separates three things that are often blurred: the formula credit for months of work, the interview advantage, and who actually fills the batch. Figures come from IIM policies for 2026-28 and 2027-29 and from the batch reports each college publishes, with the year shown. Check the policy for your cycle before you decide.
Freshers vs work experience in IIM admission: how is the credit built?
Experience enters a policy as marks that rise with months of full-time work, then flatten or fall. Three examples from 2026-28 policies:
- IIM Jammu: scored up to a maximum of 10 marks, with the peak at 24 to 36 months.
- IIM Kashipur: 6 to 36 months earns 3 to 15 marks, with the top marks for 18 to 30 months and nothing above 36 months.
- IIM Nagpur: only full-time paid experience after graduation counts.
The counting date matters too. IIM Calcutta's 2027-29 policy counts experience up to 31 January 2027, so months worked after that date earn nothing this cycle. The table shows how much of the final 100 points experience can carry.
| IIM | Cycle | Work-experience marks | Out of |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Lucknow | 2026-28 | 5 | 100 |
| IIM Calcutta | 2027-29 | 8 | 100 |
| IIM Nagpur | 2026-28 | 9 | 100 |
| IIM Jammu | 2026-28 | up to 10 | 100 |
| IIM Kashipur | 2026-28 | up to 15 | 100 |
| IIM Sambalpur | 2026-28 | up to 20 | 100 |
In these policies the CAT term is two to six times larger than the experience term. A candidate with no experience gives up between 5 and 20 marks at most.
What does batch data show about average work experience?
The averages below are what each college reports for the batch shown. Definitions vary: some colleges average over the whole batch, others only over students with experience, and IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode report combined cohorts.
| College | Batch | Average work experience (months) |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | 2026-28 | 24 |
| IIM Bangalore | 2026-28 | 27 |
| IIM Sambalpur | 2025-27 | 28 |
| IIM Kozhikode | 2025-27 | 24 |
| IIM Calcutta | 2024-26 | 22.6 |
| FMS Delhi | 2024-26 | 19.5 |
| FORE School of Management | 2024-26 | 8 |
Fresher shares, where reported, show a different pattern. IIM Bodh Gaya reported 76.25% freshers in its 2024-26 flagship batch and IIM Jammu 72% for its class of 2026. IIM Nagpur reported 42.42% for 2024-26, and IIM Bangalore's 2026-28 batch had 15%. The IIMs with the longest average experience and those with a fresher majority are different institutes.
Where are freshers strongest?
Freshers are strongest where a policy rewards CAT and academics. IIM Bangalore's 2026-28 pre-interview score gives Class 10, Class 12 and graduation 10 points each, IIM Lucknow's final score gives academics 10, and IIM Bodh Gaya's profile block gives academics 15 of 100.
One policy we hold ties the percentile floor to experience. IIM Sambalpur's 2026-28 minimum overall percentile is 90 for General, but 85 for women and for men with at least one year of relevant experience. A male fresher faces the higher floor.
Where does experience help? In the interview
The interview carries 50% of the final score at IIM Ahmedabad (2027-29), 48 of 100 at IIM Calcutta (2027-29) and 40 of the post-interview score at IIM Bangalore (2026-28). An experienced candidate has a role, a result and a reason to switch to talk about. A fresher is asked about academics, projects and goals.
No IIM in our records publishes interview scores by experience, so the size of this advantage is unknown. Freshers can close part of the gap with internships, projects and club roles told in the same four beats: situation, action, result with a number, and what changed. The GD and PI preparation note shows how.
Do newer IIMs weigh work experience more? Check the policy
The largest experience credits we hold are 20 of 100 at IIM Sambalpur and IIM Sirmaur and 15 at IIM Kashipur (all 2026-28), and all three are newer IIMs. IIM Nagpur and IIM Jammu, also newer, sit at 9 and 10, while IIM Lucknow and IIM Calcutta give 5 and 8. So the pattern is loose, and it is a snapshot because policies are rewritten each cycle.
IIM Jammu, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Kashipur had not posted a 2027-29 policy on 6 Nov 2026. Read the new document for the credit table, the peak band and the counting date.
A fresher's plan: how to build the other columns
- Push CAT above the overall and sectional floors. The free CAT Compass mock shows which section is below the floor.
- Keep academic documents complete. Marks cannot change after graduation, so present them cleanly.
- Build three interview stories from an internship, a project or a student role, each with a number.
- Use diversity items where you qualify, such as gender or stream, after checking each policy's definition.
An experienced applicant's plan
- Count your months to the policy's date, not to today. Full-time, paid, post-graduation work is what usually counts.
- Keep offer letters, relieving letters or payslips ready for verification.
- Prepare three stories with a result, a failure and a reason for switching.
- Explain why an MBA now, and why this IIM, in two sentences each.
Should you apply now or after two years?
| Situation | Lean | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| CAT percentile near or above your target IIM's floor, strong academics | Apply now | Missing experience costs 5 to 20 marks at most |
| CAT below every floor you would accept, no clear goal | Work, then retake | Experience adds interview material and time to improve |
| Target IIM peaks its credit at 24 to 36 months | Compare | A few more months may move you into the peak band |
Pay also matters. The predictor's model assumes pay after an MBA rises about 2.5% to 6% for each year of experience, up to six years, depending on how much the college values experience. That is a modelled assumption, not a placement rule. Use the MBA ROI calculator with your own salary before you decide.
