- GMAC allows up to three NMAT attempts per testing year, with at least 15 days between attempts. A retake costs Rs 3,000 plus taxes.
- An NMAT score is valid for one application cycle only, and up to five score reports are free.
- Whether NMIMS reads your best or your first valid score is reported differently on different pages. It is not confirmed, so ask NMIMS in writing before you pay for a retake.
- Colleges differ. K J Somaiya lists NMAT as best of two attempts, and TAPMI shortlists on the best valid score.
The NMAT retake best score question has no single answer. GMAC fixes the number of attempts, the gap and the fee, but each college decides which of your scores it reads. For NMIMS the reports conflict: some pages say it takes only your first valid score, others say it takes the best of your attempts.
This post sets out what GMAC states as of 6 November 2026, marks where the evidence is unsettled, and gives a short routine to confirm the policy before you book a second attempt.
The three-attempt rule and what a testing year is
NMAT by GMAC allows up to three attempts in a testing year: your first attempt plus two retakes. For 2026-27, registration ran from 20 August to 10 October 2026, scheduling ran to 22 October, and tests are delivered between 2 November and 20 December 2026.
The score is valid for one application cycle only. So a best-of-three comparison can only happen inside one admission season, and an NMAT score from this window will not carry into the next one.
Gap between attempts: 15 days or 7?
GMAC's terms say to wait at least 15 days between attempts. Some pages quote seven days. Plan with 15, because a slot booked on the shorter figure may be refused.
- Second attempt: 20 November + 15 days = 5 December.
- Third attempt: 5 December + 15 days = 20 December, the last day of the window.
Answer: 5 December and 20 December, if slots are available. A first attempt after 20 November leaves no room for a third attempt in this window.
Whether retake slots can still be booked is shown only in your own GMAC account, so look there before you plan around any date.
Fee and slot booking for a retake
| Item | Fee, excluding taxes |
|---|---|
| First attempt | Rs 3,000 |
| Each retake | Rs 3,000 |
| Reschedule a slot | Rs 1,200 |
| Score report beyond the five free ones | Rs 400 each |
Three attempts cost 3 x 3,000 = Rs 9,000 before taxes. Add one reschedule and three extra score reports and the total is Rs 11,400 before taxes. A retake costs as much as the first attempt, so each one you avoid saves Rs 3,000.
NMAT retake best score or first score: the NMIMS question
Some points are firm. GMAC allows three attempts, every attempt produces a score, and you can send scores to up to five schools at no extra cost. What is not firm is which attempt NMIMS reads.
The reports conflict. One set of pages says NMIMS considers only your first valid score. Another says it takes the best of your attempts. This cannot be settled from NMIMS's own pages. Its NMAT handout says it shortlists on sectional and total NMAT scores, then holds a competency test or a personal interview, and weighs work experience and past academics with weights not published. It states no best-versus-first rule.
There is also a timing issue. The NMIMS handout lists its application window as 20 August to 10 October 2026. If that window is closed and no later round exists, a retake may not help NMIMS this cycle. Ask.
Which colleges take which score
Colleges set their own rules, so the value of a retake changes with the college. This is what is published.
| College (cycle) | NMAT policy as published |
|---|---|
| NMIMS Mumbai (2026 handout) | Shortlists on sectional and total NMAT score. Best-versus-first is not stated. Applications closed 10 October 2026. |
| K J Somaiya (2027-29) | Lists NMAT as best of two attempts, among its accepted exams |
| TAPMI Manipal (2027-29) | Stage I shortlists on the best valid entrance score. Accepts NMAT by GMAC 2026. Applications close 31 December 2026. |
| Great Lakes Chennai (2027-28) | Accepts NMAT taken in 2025 or later. No minimum cut-off. Cycle 1 deadline 26 November 2026. |
| Amity Business School (2026-28) | Minimum NMAT 250 for the non-sponsored category, 200 for sponsored |
IBS Hyderabad and Alliance School of Business also list NMAT. Use the NMAT College Predictor to see which colleges are realistic at your score.
When a retake pays off and when it does not
- It can pay off if your score is below the floor or range of a college that reads your best or latest score.
- It can pay off if your error log shows one fixable cause, such as a weak section, and you have the weeks to fix it.
- It does not pay off if the college reads only the first valid score.
- It does not pay off if the retake date falls after the college's application deadline.
- It carries risk if a college reads your latest score, because a retake can come out lower.
Check the deadline column before the score column. A better score that arrives after a form closes has no value at that college.
How adaptive scoring affects a retake
NMAT is computer-adaptive, so the difficulty you see depends on how you answer. Each section is scored from 12 to 120 and the total from 36 to 360. There is no negative marking, and a finished section cannot be revisited.
Two things follow. A retake will not repeat your first paper, so you cannot prepare by memorising it. And your first attempt is most useful as a section-level diagnosis. Language Skills is the tightest section, with 36 questions in 28 minutes, about 47 seconds each. The NMAT guide has pacing checkpoints for all three sections.
Steps to confirm with the college before you book
- Read the college's NMAT admissions page for any line on multiple attempts.
- Write to admissions: if I attempt NMAT more than once, will you consider the first valid score, the latest or the best?
- Ask whether the application deadline leaves room for a retake date.
- Keep the reply as an email or screenshot.
- Check your GMAC account for real retake slots, with 15 days between attempts.
- Pay the retake fee only after you have an answer.
