- An MBA is a degree from a university or an institute empowered by law to award degrees. A PGDM is a diploma from an autonomous institute whose programme is approved by AICTE.
- AIU equivalence is a separate paper. AIU's own list equates a two-year full-time PGDM with the MBA degree for admission to higher studies, and PhD rules, UGC-NET and some government notices may ask for it. Whether you have it depends on the institute, the programme and the batch.
- For most private-sector hiring, the institute and its placement record matter far more than the word on the certificate.
- Ask the institute for its AICTE approval and any AIU certificate before you pay, and read the exact wording of any job or PhD notice you care about.
In an MBA vs PGDM comparison, the legal difference is simple: an MBA is a degree and a PGDM is a diploma. The two are treated as equal for many purposes, but not automatically, and the gap shows up where a rulebook checks the word 'degree'.
This post explains what AICTE, UGC and AIU each do, what equivalence is, where it matters and where it does not, and how to check a programme yourself. It is general guidance, not legal advice. Rules change, so read the current notice before any decision that depends on it. Programme names below are from the college records on this site, checked 6 November 2026.
Degree versus diploma: who awards what
In India, a degree can be awarded only by a university (central, state, deemed or private) or by an institution that a law passed by Parliament has empowered to do so. A B-school that is neither a university nor part of one cannot call its two-year programme an MBA degree. It awards a Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the PGDM.
Classroom experience is often similar. What differs is the legal status of the certificate and the body that regulates the institute.
| MBA | PGDM | |
|---|---|---|
| Awarded by | A university, deemed university or institute empowered by law | An autonomous institute |
| Certificate | Degree | Diploma |
| Curriculum | Set through the university's academic bodies | Set by the institute, which can change it quickly |
| Approval | University recognised under the UGC framework | Programme approved by AICTE |
AICTE, UGC and AIU: three bodies, three jobs
- AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approves technical and management institutes and their programmes. A PGDM institute needs AICTE approval to run its programme.
- UGC (University Grants Commission) regulates universities and the degrees they award. A PGDM is a diploma, so it is not a UGC degree. That does not make it invalid. It means the PGDM needs another route to be treated as a degree-equal.
- AIU (Association of Indian Universities) is the body of universities that issues equivalence: a statement that a qualification matches a degree of Indian universities for stated purposes.
When a page says 'UGC approves PGDM' or 'AICTE makes PGDM equal to MBA', it is blending these three roles. Come back to this split whenever two sources disagree. A bill introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2025 would replace UGC and AICTE with a single regulator. We could not confirm on 6 November 2026 that it has become law, so check which body issues the approval you need.
What is AIU equivalence and how is it granted?
Equivalence is a certificate or listing, not a rename. AIU publishes a list of institutes whose two-year full-time PGDM it has equated with the MBA degree "for purpose of admission to higher studies". The list we read, updated up to 5 June 2026, gives a validity period for each institute. It says AIU approval lasts only while the AICTE approval and an NBA, AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or SAQS accreditation for the course remain valid, whichever ends earlier.
The list is kept programme by programme, with a date range against each entry, and some ranges have already ended. A certificate that names a different programme, or older years, does not cover you.
Where equivalence matters: PhD, UGC-NET and government posts
- PhD admission. Each university frames its own rule. A university that asks for 'a master's degree' may ask a PGDM holder for the AIU certificate.
- UGC-NET. The NTA information bulletin sets the qualification rule for each cycle. Read the current one to see whether a PGDM counts in Management and what proof it asks for, which can include an AIU equivalence certificate.
- Government posts. The recruitment notice decides. Some say 'MBA or PGDM from a recognised institute'. Others say 'degree from a recognised university'.
The pattern to watch: where a rule says 'degree', a PGDM holder may be asked for the equivalence paper. Where it says 'MBA or PGDM', it usually is not needed. The notice's own wording decides.
Where it does not matter: most private-sector hiring
Campus recruiters mostly look at the institute, the batch, your internship and your interview, and at placement lists more than at certificate classes. The table below shows how mixed the pay picture is within each label.
| Programme | Certificate in our records | Average package | Batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Calcutta | MBA | 36 LPA | 2024-26 |
| SPJIMR Mumbai | PGDM | 33.6 LPA | 2024-26 |
| FMS Delhi | MBA | 32.27 LPA | 2025-26 |
| XLRI Jamshedpur BM | PGDM | 31.4 LPA | 2024-26 |
| BIMTECH Greater Noida | PGDM | 11.1 LPA | 2023-24 |
| Amity Business School | MBA | 7.35 LPA | 2024 |
Pay follows the institute, not the label. See the full fees and placements table before you judge any programme by its certificate.
How do I check a programme's AICTE and AIU status?
- Copy the exact programme name and batch years from the institute's admission page, for example 'PGDM (Business Management), 2027-29'.
- Find the institute in AICTE's list of approved institutions and confirm that the programme and the academic year are approved.
- Look for AIU's equivalence notice or list naming the institute. If it is not listed, ask the institute for the certificate with its reference number and date.
- Read the certificate for the programme name and the years it covers. Ask in writing whether your batch is included.
- For a university MBA, confirm the university's recognition on the UGC website. For an online MBA, also use the UGC-DEB check.
MBA vs PGDM: which top programmes are which?
Names vary even among well-known institutes. These are the programme names in our college records:
| Institute | Programme name in our records |
|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) |
| IIM Bangalore | PGP, leading to MBA |
| IIM Calcutta | MBA (two-year full-time residential) |
| FMS Delhi | MBA (Full Time), Delhi University faculty |
| JBIMS Mumbai | Master of Management Studies (MMS), University of Mumbai |
| SPJIMR Mumbai | PGDM, described by the institute as equivalent to an MBA |
| XLRI Jamshedpur | PGDM (Business Management) |
| MDI Gurgaon | PGDM |
| MICA Ahmedabad | PGDM-C (Communications) |
The IIM Act 2017 empowers IIMs to award degrees. Some IIM pages in our records use 'MBA', some 'PGP leading to MBA' and some 'PGP' alone, so read the wording on the institute's own page and on the certificate for your batch.
A checklist before you pay
- Ask: is the certificate a degree or a diploma, and who awards it?
- Ask for the AICTE approval for the current year and, if the institute claims one, the AIU equivalence certificate.
- Write down why you might need equivalence (a PhD, UGC-NET, a named government exam) and read that rule today.
- Compare placement reports and fees, not certificate names. The MBA Predictor shows fee and package for each college it covers.
