- Most two-year flagship programmes we checked state no minimum work experience. The one-year ISB PGP and Great Lakes PGPM need at least 24 months.
- Work experience earns points but not many: up to 8 of 100 at IIM Calcutta, 5 at IIM Lucknow, 5% at IIM Kozhikode's shortlist and up to 10% at IIT Madras.
- Fresher-heavy batches exist: IIM Bodh Gaya 76.25% freshers, IIM Jammu 72%, SIBM Bengaluru 58%, FMS Delhi 54%, SCMHRD Pune 53%.
- Older IIM batches average 22 to 27 months of experience, so a fresher is often the minority there. That is an average, not a rule.
An MBA for freshers is possible: most two-year flagship programmes we checked state no minimum work experience, and several batches are mostly freshers. The real question is where a fresher is the norm and where an experienced applicant has an edge.
This post uses published eligibility pages, selection weights and class profiles as of 6 November 2026. Batch years sit next to every figure, because class profiles change every year.
Do MBA colleges require work experience?
Not the two-year flagship programmes below. Their official pages either state no minimum or say experience only earns points. The one-year programmes are different.
| Programme (cycle) | Work-experience rule on the official page |
|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad (2027-29) | No minimum stated |
| IIM Calcutta (2027-29) | No minimum; experience earns up to 8 selection points |
| IIM Lucknow MBA (2026-28) | No minimum. The separate MBA-SM needs 24 months |
| IIM Indore (2026-28) | Not a minimum; adds 0 to 3 marks to the shortlist score |
| IIM Kozhikode (2026-28) | Not a minimum; earns up to 5% of the shortlist score |
| IIT Madras (2026-28) | No minimum on the regular CAT track |
| XLRI PGDM (BM), XAT 2027 | None stated |
| SPJIMR PGDM (2027-29) | Freshers and up to 5 years can apply; not mandatory |
| FMS Delhi (2027-29) | No rule stated |
| ISB PGP (Class of 2028) | At least 24 months of full-time experience |
| Great Lakes PGPM (2027-28) | At least 2 years of full-time experience as of 30 April 2027 |
CAT 2026 itself lets final-year students register, so you can apply before your degree result arrives, subject to each college's proof deadline.
How much does work experience count in selection?
Published formulas show a small weight. These are the cycles named on each page.
- IIM Calcutta (2027-29): final merit is CAT 30, PI 48, WAT 8, academic diversity 6 and work experience 8, out of 100.
- IIM Lucknow (2026-28): final selection is CAT 30, academics 5 and 5, diversity 5, work experience 5, WAT 10 and PI 40.
- IIM Kozhikode (2026-28): the shortlist index gives work experience up to 5%, against CAT 50%, Class X 15% and Class XII 20%.
- MDI (2027-29): work experience is 10% of the first-stage shortlist, beside CAT or GMAT at 65%.
- IIT Madras (2026-28): work experience carries up to 10% of the composite score.
In each formula the CAT score and the interview weigh far more. A fresher gives up a few points, and the larger gap shows up in how convincingly you answer the interview.
What do batch averages say about an MBA for freshers?
| College | Batch | Average work experience | Freshers in batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| FORE School of Management (all PGDM programmes) | 2024-26 | 8 months | Not published |
| SCMHRD Pune | 2024-26 | 10.4 months | 53% |
| IMI Delhi | 2024-26 | 18 months | 45% |
| IIM Rohtak | 2024-26 | 18.8 months | Not published |
| FMS Delhi | 2024-26 | 19.5 months | 54% |
| IIM Indore | 2024-26 | 22 months | Not published |
| IIM Calcutta | 2024-26 | 22.6 months | Not published |
| IIM Ahmedabad | 2026-28 | 24 months | Not published |
| IIM Bangalore (PGP and PGPBA combined) | 2026-28 | 27 months | Not published |
| MDI Gurgaon | 2024-26 | 27 months | Not published |
IIM Lucknow does not publish an average. Its 2026 report gives bands instead: 225 students with up to one year, 109 with one to two years and 141 with two to three years. Even where the average is high, a large block of the class has little experience.
Which colleges have a fresher majority?
- IIM Bodh Gaya (2024-26, flagship MBA): 76.25% freshers.
- IIM Jammu (2024-26): 72% freshers.
- NMIMS Bengaluru (2024-26): 69.64% freshers.
- SIBM Bengaluru (2025-27): 58% freshers.
- FMS Delhi (2024-26): 54% freshers, with 44% engineers.
- SCMHRD Pune (2024-26): 53% freshers, average age about 24.
Where is experience the norm?
IIM Bangalore (27 months, 2026-28), MDI (27 months, 2024-26) and IIT Bombay (25 months, 2024-26) sit at the high end of the published averages. NMIMS Mumbai reports 24.4 months. None of these sets a minimum, so an average of two years does not shut a fresher out.
The one-year programmes are where experience is the entry ticket. ISB's Class of 2026 reported an average of four years of prior work experience, with 502 of 812 students at up to four years.
How can a fresher compete with experienced applicants?
- Score well in CAT. It weighs 55 in IIM Bangalore's pre-interview score, 60 in IIM Lucknow's shortlist composite and 50% in IIM Kozhikode's index. Take the free CAT Compass mock early to see where you stand.
- Protect your school and degree marks. IIM Kozhikode counts Class X and XII at 15% and 20%, and IIM Bangalore gives Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor's marks 10 each.
- Build evidence for the interview. The PI weighs 35% at IIM Kozhikode, 40 at IIM Lucknow, 45 at IIM Indore and 48 at IIM Calcutta. Internships, projects and leadership give you material. The GD and PI note covers the format.
- Check realistic calls. Run your score through the MBA predictor so your list matches your profile.
What does a gap cost compared with going straight?
- Fresher: fee of Rs 20 lakh, and almost no income given up during the MBA.
- Two years of work first: the same Rs 20 lakh fee, plus 2 x Rs 8 lakh = Rs 16 lakh of salary not earned while studying, before tax.
- Total cost of studying: about Rs 20 lakh against about Rs 36 lakh.
Answer: The worker earned about Rs 16 lakh before tax in the two earlier years, so the real difference is timing and profile. The fresher starts the post-MBA salary two years sooner.
Waiting can also reduce the loan you need. Going straight keeps you on the earlier path. Neither is cheaper in every case.
When is it better to wait two years?
| Situation | Direction |
|---|---|
| Your CAT score matches the programmes you want | Apply now. Most flagship programmes state no minimum |
| You want a one-year programme | Wait. ISB PGP and Great Lakes PGPM need 24 months |
| Your score is well below your target's estimate | Plan a second attempt, and set the target with the predictor |
| You cannot say what role you want | A job can sharpen that, but it is not a reason alone |
Read the rules in MBA eligibility and check call chances before you decide.
