- Consulting takes a different share of each college's placements: 45 percent at IIM Bangalore, 39 at IIM Lucknow, 38 at IIM Calcutta, 36 at XLRI, 35.1 at MDI and 10 at IMT (2024-26 reports).
- Hiring runs through the summer internship. A large part of final offers are pre-placement offers: 283 of 665 offers at IIM Bangalore in 2024-26.
- At some colleges consulting mostly means IT or technology consulting. Great Lakes Chennai's 2025-26 report shows tech consulting at 32 percent and strategy consulting at 7 percent.
- Offers per firm, acceptance rates and consulting-only pay are not public in the reports we hold, so ignore claims that give them.
- You can reach consulting without a top MBA, but through other doors: lateral hiring, advisory and IT consulting units.
The main route into MBA consulting careers India offers is campus placement at a limited set of colleges, where, among the colleges listed below, consulting takes from one in ten to nearly one in two placements. Which college you join decides most of your odds.
This post explains what consulting covers, how internship and PPO hiring work, what placement reports show by college, how to prepare, and what pay data is public. Figures come from official 2024-26 placement reports unless another batch is stated, checked on 6 November 2026.
What does consulting cover: strategy, advisory, Big 4 and IT consulting?
Campus reports put several different jobs under one word. They differ in work, in client type and in how hard they are to get.
- Strategy consulting: top-management questions such as entry strategy, pricing or cost. Global strategy firms such as BCG, McKinsey and Bain appear on the 2026 recruiter lists of IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta.
- Second-tier strategy and advisory: firms such as Kearney, EY-Parthenon and Alvarez and Marsal, which appear on the IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta lists.
- Big 4 and professional services: audit-linked firms with advisory, risk and deal practices. Deloitte, KPMG and EY recruit at several campuses.
- IT and technology consulting: transformation, implementation and analytics projects at technology services firms. Accenture, Cognizant and Infosys Global appear on recruiter lists.
How does MBA consulting hiring work: internship and PPO?
Most campus consulting hiring runs through the summer internship at the end of the first year. IIM Ahmedabad's internship lasts eight to ten weeks, and IIM Calcutta makes a summer internship compulsory between years one and two. A good internship ends in a pre-placement offer, called a PPO.
PPOs are a large part of the final numbers: 283 of IIM Bangalore's 665 offers in 2024-26, 179 PPOs at IIM Mumbai, 189 at MDI, and 42.5 percent of XLRI's cohort. Colleges count offers, students and companies differently, so use these as scale and not as a ranking.
MBA consulting careers India: what do placement reports show?
| College | Consulting share | Batch | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Bangalore | 45 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split (PGP and PGPBA together) |
| IIM Indore | 41 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split in report |
| IIM Lucknow | 39 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split in report |
| IIM Calcutta | 38 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split in report |
| XLRI (BM and HRM) | 36 percent | 2024-26 | Candidates with consulting offers |
| MDI Gurgaon | 35.1 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split in report |
| IIM Kozhikode | 32 percent | 2023-25 | Sector split in report |
| IIM Mumbai | 25 percent | 2024-26 | Sector split in report |
| TAPMI (MBA General) | 20 percent | 2024-26 | Students placed, by job profile |
| IMT Ghaziabad | 10 percent | 2024-26 | Sector contribution |
IIM Ahmedabad's 2026 report counts consulting as the largest source of offers: 155 of 392 accepted offers. Among IITs, IIT Kharagpur lists Strategy and Consulting at 45 percent (2023-25), and IIT Madras lists Consulting at 30 percent (2024-26).
Use the table as a ladder of exposure. A college at 10 percent can still place students in consulting, but there are fewer seats and fewer recruiters.
How do you prepare, month by month?
The calendar below is indicative. Each college publishes its own placement schedule, and firms change dates from year to year.
| Phase | Indicative timing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Before joining | Months before the programme starts | Learn the structure of a case: issue tree, hypothesis, numbers. Practise mental maths. Draft your resume with the consulting resume guide. |
| First term | Around months 1 to 4 | Join student case practice, build a partner, take two practice cases a week. |
| Internship hiring | Roughly October to November (indicative) | Resume shortlists, case rounds and interviews for the summer internship. |
| Final hiring | Roughly January to March of the final year (indicative) | PPO conversions and final-round offers for those not yet placed. |
What are the off-campus routes and lateral entry?
If your college is not on a firm's campus list, three other doors exist. The first is lateral hiring: some firms hire experienced people from industry into associate or manager roles. The second is joining a Big 4 advisory practice or an IT services consulting unit, which hire at more campuses and in larger numbers. The third is moving into consulting after a few years in an industry role where you built expertise a firm wants.
These routes are slower and less predictable than campus hiring, but they exist. Our data cannot tell you how many people take each one.
Why does consulting at some colleges mean IT consulting?
The word is a category label that colleges define for themselves. Great Lakes Chennai's one-year PGPM (2025-26) splits it: tech consulting 32 percent, business consulting 14, strategy consulting 7 and analytics consulting 5. A strategy-firm seat is a small part of that.
At XLRI, the recruiters with the most offers in 2026 included Accenture Strategy and Consulting, Accenture Technology, Deloitte USI, EY Parthenon and PwC next to BCG. When you read a consulting share, open the recruiter list to see which kind of consulting it is.
What is and is not public about consulting pay?
The reports we hold publish batch-wide averages and medians, not consulting-only pay. One exception: IIM Lucknow's batch of 2026 reports a mean CTC of 36.9 lakh for consulting and 34.8 lakh for finance, against a batch average of 33.2 lakh.
Not public in these reports: offers per firm, acceptance rates, and pay by firm. Any figure that claims them without a named report should be treated as unverified.
Who should aim for consulting?
Consulting suits people who like structuring an unclear problem, who are comfortable with travel and long hours, and who can write and speak in short, clear steps. It is a weaker fit if you want deep functional expertise early, or a set routine.
If you are choosing between colleges, look at the consulting share and the recruiter list first. The MBA Predictor shows where your CAT percentile may put you, and our IIM Bangalore page has its full report.
