MBA from IIT: Fees, Packages and Eligibility of Five Programmes

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 7 min read

In short
  • An MBA from IIT costs less than an older IIM. Verified fees run from Rs 11.75 lakh (IIT Kharagpur, 2025 batch) to Rs 15.56 lakh (IIT Bombay, 2026-28), against Rs 20.75 to 27.5 lakh at IIM Lucknow, Bangalore, Calcutta and Ahmedabad.
  • Average packages in the latest reports run from Rs 17.91 lakh (IIT Roorkee) to Rs 28.16 lakh (IIT Bombay), across two different batches.
  • IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras and Roorkee admit graduates of any discipline. IIT Kharagpur's VGSOM listed a narrower set of degrees in its 2025-27 brochure.
  • All five use CAT and then an interview. Our estimates of the CAT percentile for a call run from 92 to 98, and are not official cutoffs.

An MBA from IIT is a two-year, CAT-based programme that costs less than the older IIMs and reports average packages of about Rs 18 to 28 lakh. Five IITs run one: IIT Bombay (SJMSOM), IIT Delhi (DMS), IIT Kharagpur (VGSOM), IIT Madras (DoMS) and IIT Roorkee (DoMS).

This post puts them side by side on fee, package, eligibility and selection, with the batch year beside every number. Figures are as of 6 November 2026 and come from each programme's own fee sheet and placement report. The CAT cutoff column is our estimate.

How do the five programmes of an MBA from IIT compare?

The CAT cutoff is our estimate of the percentile that gives roughly a 50% chance of an interview call for a General-category candidate with an average profile. It is not an official cutoff. Enter your own profile in the MBA predictor for a fuller picture.

IIT Roorkee's fee is left out because our figure is not verified. Read the DoMS fee page before you budget.

Why do fee totals for the same IIT differ from page to page?

A fee total depends on the batch, the category and whether hostel, mess, deposits and taxes are counted. Three examples show it.

  • IIT Bombay: Rs 15.56 lakh for the 2026-28 batch in the General, EWS and OBC-NCL categories. Hostel and mess are optional and charged extra. The SC, ST and PwD total is Rs 7.56 lakh.
  • IIT Delhi: Rs 12 lakh is tuition over four semesters. Other charges and a residence fee come on top in each instalment.
  • IIT Kharagpur: Rs 11.75 lakh is the 2025 batch figure in our table. The 2026-28 fee sheet adds up to about Rs 13.04 lakh once hostel seat rent, mess advance and hall charges are included.

Who can apply for an MBA from IIT?

Four of the five accept graduates of any discipline. VGSOM was narrower in its last full brochure. The cycles are named below.

  • IIT Bombay (2026-28): bachelor's degree with at least 60% marks (55% for SC, ST, PwD) or CPI 6.5 out of 10 (6 for SC, ST, PwD). Final-year students can apply. A valid CAT score is needed.
  • IIT Delhi (2027 intake): bachelor's degree with 60% or 6.00 CGPA (55% or 5.50 for SC, ST, PwD). Applications open on 30 November 2026 (tentative) and close on 25 January 2027.
  • IIT Madras (2026-28): any discipline with first class or 60% (55% for SC, ST, PwD). No minimum work experience on the regular CAT track, which gives it up to 10% of the composite score. IIT graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or above are exempt from CAT.
  • IIT Roorkee (2026-28): any discipline with 60% (55% for SC, ST, PD) and a CAT score. IIT graduates with a CGPA of 7.0 or above are exempt from CAT.
  • IIT Kharagpur, VGSOM (2025-27 brochure): a four-year engineering, technology or pharmacy degree, or a master's in science, economics or commerce with mathematics or statistics at bachelor's level, with 60% (55% for SC, ST, PwD) and a minimum CAT percentile of 90 for General and EWS.

Non-engineers are a real share of the batches that publish a split: 33% at IIT Delhi and 32.5% at IIT Roorkee (both 2023-25). IIT Madras reports 58% engineers in 2024-26 and says it was the first IIT to admit non-engineering graduates, in 2013.

Watch out. Eligibility text changes between cycles. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026, with results expected in the first week of January 2027. Confirm the rules on each admission page before you apply.

SJMSOM or DMS Delhi: how do the two compare?

The gap in average package (28.16 against 22.5) is partly a batch effect: IIT Delhi's latest final report is for 2023-25 and IIT Bombay's is for 2024-26.

  • Class: SJMSOM's 2024-26 batch had 126 students, an average of 25 months of work experience, 15% women and a median CAT percentile of 98.87. DMS reports 67% engineers and 19.7 months of average work experience for 2023-25.
  • Selection: SJMSOM's interview shortlist weights CAT 75%, academic profile 20% and work experience 5%. DMS shortlists on CAT, then interviews.
  • Placement: SJMSOM reports 100% placed with 51 recruiters. DMS reports 98% placed, with 30.07% of placements in strategy and consulting and 23.78% in IT.

What stands out at VGSOM, DoMS Madras and DoMS Roorkee?

  • VGSOM Kharagpur: the first management school within the IIT system, set up in 1993. Its 2023-25 report shows 45% of placements in strategy and consulting and 139 of 139 participating students placed, from a batch of 142.
  • DoMS Madras: a seven-quarter structure instead of semesters. In the 2026 cycle it received 4,871 applications for a sanctioned intake of 106 seats, and 74 enrolled. The top 10% of the batch averaged Rs 31.2 lakh, against Rs 18.3 lakh overall.
  • DoMS Roorkee: 95 seats and a group discussion plus interview. Its report gives the domain share of companies visited (operations, IT and analytics 54%, marketing 27%), which is a share of companies, not of offers.

What does the fee-to-package ratio tell you?

The ratio divides the average package by the total fee. It shows how many times the fee a batch earned in its first placement year.

Example. IIT Bombay, 2026-28 fee against 2024-26 average package.
  1. Average package: Rs 28.16 lakh.
  2. Total fee: Rs 15.56 lakh.
  3. 28.16 divided by 15.56 is 1.81.

Answer: About 1.8 times the fee. On the same method IIT Delhi is 1.88, IIT Kharagpur 1.94 and IIT Madras 1.50.

On the same method IIM Lucknow comes to 1.60, IIM Bangalore 1.36 and IIM Calcutta 1.33. The IITs score well mostly because their fees are low.

The ratio leaves out tax on a gross CTC, variable pay, loan interest, hostel and mess, and two years without a salary. It mixes batches when the fee is newer than the package, and a few high offers can lift an average, which is why the median matters more.

How should you read an IIT placement report?

  1. Check the batch. IIT Delhi, Kharagpur and Roorkee had no 2024-26 final report listed on 6 November 2026, so their numbers are a year older than IIT Bombay's and Madras's.
  2. Use the median next to the average. The five medians run from Rs 17.64 to 26 lakh.
  3. Check what the sector split divides. Delhi, Kharagpur and Madras give shares of placements. Roorkee gives shares of companies.
  4. Read the placed share with its denominator.

NIRF 2025 (Management) ranks IIT Delhi 4th, IIT Kharagpur 12th, IIT Madras 13th, IIT Bombay 14th and IIT Roorkee 22nd. See the NIRF 2025 page.

How do you choose between the IIT programmes?

  1. Confirm eligibility first, especially for VGSOM if you are not an engineer.
  2. Estimate your call chances with the IIM and IIT call predictor, not one cutoff number.
  3. Compare medians from the same batch year.
  4. Ask a current student what the fee sheet leaves out.
FAQ

Common questions

Is an MBA from an IIT worth it?

It depends on your fee, your loan and the job you want. The fee-to-package ratio is 1.50 to 1.94 for the four programmes with a verified fee, higher than at the older IIMs because fees are lower. Packages are lower too, so compare medians and your own costs.

Can non-engineers apply to IIT MBA?

At IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras and Roorkee the official pages accept graduates of any discipline with at least 60%. IIT Kharagpur's VGSOM listed engineering, technology and pharmacy degrees, or specific master's degrees, in its 2025-27 brochure. Check the page for your cycle before you apply.

Which IIT has the best MBA placements?

IIT Bombay has the highest average in our table, Rs 28.16 lakh for 2024-26, with a median of Rs 26 lakh. IIT Delhi and Kharagpur are close to each other at about Rs 22.5 lakh, but for the older 2023-25 batch. Different batches make a strict ranking unreliable.

What CAT percentile do IIT MBAs need?

Our estimates for a roughly 50% chance of an interview call are 98 for IIT Bombay, 97 for IIT Delhi, 95 for IIT Madras and Roorkee, and 92 for IIT Kharagpur. These are General-category estimates for an average profile, not official cutoffs. Category, marks and work experience move the line.

Is the IIT MBA degree the same as an IIM MBA?

Names differ. The IITs here call theirs an MBA, while IIM Lucknow describes its PGP as a two-year full-time residential MBA. Fees, batch sizes, recruiters and selection weights also differ, so compare on those and check the exact credential title on each page.
