- Minimum work experience for the executive and online MBAs checked runs from none to 8 years. The headline number matters less than what counts and when it is measured.
- IIT Jodhpur's Executive MBA counts relevant full-time work only. Internships, apprenticeships and part-time roles do not count.
- IIM Mumbai's executive MBAs need two or more years. Its MBA-BPGP asks for three years by 31 October 2026, a fixed date and not the day you apply.
- The programme pages checked do not say how self-employed or family-business experience is treated. Ask admissions in writing.
- Entry routes differ: no test, the programme's own test, IMAT or a CAT, GMAT or GRE score, or a score only if you have one year of experience.
Executive MBA eligibility comes down to three rules: how many years of experience, what counts as experience, and the date on which it is measured. Across the programmes checked for this site, the minimum runs from none to 8 years. IIM Mumbai's executive MBAs and IIT Jodhpur's Executive MBA (Technology) need two or more years of work experience.
The table below lists the rules as read on 3 November 2026, with IIM Mumbai's other programmes read on 2 November. Rules and dates change by intake, so confirm each one on the official page before you apply.
Executive MBA eligibility: the headline number and the fine print
Guides usually quote a range of a few years. The range is real, but the rules that decide your case are different ones: what the programme counts as experience, whether it is measured on the day you apply or on a fixed date, and whether you need a test at all.
What counts as experience: full-time only
- IIT Jodhpur, Executive MBA (Technology): at least two years of relevant full-time work. Internships, apprenticeships and part-time roles do not count.
- IIM Mumbai, Executive MBA (Wealth Management): two years of post-qualification experience, with banking and wealth-management experience preferred. Experience counts from the end of your qualification.
- IIM Mumbai, MBA-BPGP: relevant experience in a business organisation after graduation.
- BITS Pilani WILP MBA: you must be employed. The minimum is 1 year for BE, BTech or MSc and 2 years for 3-year degrees.
- CHRIST, MBA (Executive): the applicant must be working in Bengaluru.
Other pages do not define the term. Silence is not a yes. Ask whether freelance work, stipend-based roles or gaps between jobs count before you rely on them.
Measured when: application date or programme start?
Most pages checked do not say. IIM Mumbai's MBA-BPGP does: three years of relevant experience by 31 October 2026. Full-time programmes work the same way, since ISB counts experience as on 31 March of the intake year. Your experience on the day of the test or interview may not be the number that counts.
- Three years before 31 October 2026 is 31 October 2023. You must have started on or before that date.
- 15 September 2023 is before it, so you have three years and about six weeks.
- 15 December 2023 is after it, so your friend is about six weeks short, however long they have worked by the interview.
Answer: You meet the rule. Your friend does not, for this batch.

On IIM Mumbai's other pages, the PGPEx in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management lists 1 year, the PGPEx in Public Policy Management (blended) 5 years or more, and the MBA (Creative Industries) none.
Self-employed and family-business applicants
No programme page checked says how self-employed or family-business experience is treated. BITS Pilani WILP says candidates must be employed, and IIT Jodhpur asks for relevant full-time work. Neither says how a founder or family-business role is assessed.
Write to admissions and ask three things: does this kind of experience count, what proof do they accept, and does the work have to be relevant to a business role. Keep the reply with your application papers.
Graduation marks and category relaxation
Minimum graduation marks in the data run from 40% to 60%. IIT Jodhpur and BITS Pilani WILP ask 60%, NMIMS CDOE's Working Executive MBA 55%, and most others 50%. Experience can offset marks in places: UPES's online MBA asks 45% from applicants with 2 or more years of work, against 50% otherwise.
The MBA-BPGP lowers the mark to 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The other executive pages checked state no relaxation, so ask if it applies to you.
Experience versus test score: who needs which
- No test: NMIMS CDOE's online and Working Executive MBAs, Great Lakes' PGXPM and BITS Pilani WILP. The Working Executive MBA and the PGXPM include an interview.
- The programme's own test: IIT Jodhpur, a 60-question, 120-minute online test with negative marking, on 15 November 2026, followed by counselling. The test fee is Rs 999.
- IMAT or an existing score: IIM Mumbai's executive MBAs. IMAT is on 8 November 2026. CAT 2026 is on 29 November with results expected in the first week of January 2027, after the 2 to 11 December seat window listed for the weekend MBA-PGPM and the Wealth Management MBA, so it cannot be used for this cycle. The IMAT guide has the dates.
- A score only with a year of experience: CHRIST.
A self-check before you apply
- Count your months of full-time, post-qualification work up to the measurement date, not to today.
- Remove internships, apprenticeships, part-time and stipend periods unless the programme says they count.
- Compare your graduation marks with the minimum and ask about any relaxation.
- Identify the entry route: no test, the programme's own test, IMAT, or a CAT, GMAT or GRE score.
- Write to admissions with your exact case and keep the reply.
- Put every date on the deadline tracker.
The MBA without CAT tool filters executive, weekend and online programmes by your months of experience and graduation marks.
