Should I Retake CAT? A Decision Table, Not a Pep Talk

MBA One Stop editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · 6 min read

In short
  • Retake CAT when the gap to your target is small, your mocks are rising and you can name what will change. Move on when none of the three holds.
  • A repeat year costs you a year of post-MBA pay, less what you earn meanwhile, plus any fee gap between the colleges you are choosing between.
  • CAT allows one sitting per registered candidate per cycle. The bulletin and FAQ we checked mention no lifetime cap, so confirm on the official site.
  • Register for XAT, SNAP, CMAT or MAT in the same cycle so that a weak CAT does not leave you with nothing.

Should I retake CAT? Retake when the gap to your target percentile is small, your recent mocks are rising and you can name what will be different this time. Move on when the gap is large, your mocks are flat and nothing has changed except the date.

This post turns that into a decision table, using the fee and average-package data in our college files for the cost side. It applies both before CAT 2026 on 29 November 2026 and after the result, which is likely in the first week of January 2027. Data checked on 6 November 2026.

The cost of a lost year, in rupees and in seniority

A repeat year costs you the first year of post-MBA pay at the college you would join now, less what you earn while you prepare, plus any fee difference if the better college charges more. It also puts you a year behind in seniority at every later step.

CollegeEst. CAT percentile for a 50% callTotal fee (₹ lakh)Average package (₹ lakh a year)
IIM Ahmedabad98.327.5 (2025-27)37.97 (2024-26)
IIM Lucknow9720.75 (2026-28)33.2 (2024-26)
IIM Indore9624.12 (2026-28)27.27 (2024-26)
IIM Ranchi9619.2 (2026-28)19.26 (2025-26)
IIM Bodh Gaya9017.96 (2026-28)14.8 (2024-26)

The percentile column is a model estimate for a General candidate with an average profile. Packages are batch averages for the year shown, not what you will earn.

Example. You hold a likely offer from IIM Bodh Gaya and want IIM Indore. You earn ₹8 lakh a year now (an invented figure). What does a repeat cost, and how fast does it pay back if it works?
  1. Pay given up = 14.8 - 8 = 6.8 lakh, for the year you start a year late.
  2. Extra fee = 24.12 - 17.96 = 6.16 lakh. Total cost = 12.96 lakh.
  3. Gain per year if you land Indore = 27.27 - 14.8 = 12.47 lakh at batch averages.
  4. If your chance of landing it is p, the expected yearly gain is p × 12.47. Payback = 12.96 / (p × 12.47) years: about 2.1 years at p = 50%, 3.5 years at 30% and 5.2 years at 20%.

Answer: Only if you can honestly put your chance of a better college above about 30%. This ignores tax, loans and pay growth, so use the MBA ROI calculator for your own numbers.

Should I retake CAT if the gap to my target is small?

Yes, if the gap is small and you can say why. Percentile points are not equal. Near the top, a point takes more marks to gain than in the 80s, so closing 3 points at 97 is harder than it sounds. The rows below are our judgement, not research.

Gap to target percentileReading
Up to 3 pointsRealistic with one specific fix, such as a weak section or accuracy.
4 to 8 pointsPossible only with a rising trend and a named cause for the last result.
9 points or moreA jump this big in one cycle is uncommon. Check whether the target is the right one.

To find your gap, compare your result with the estimates on the IIM call predictor, which uses overall percentile and category.

What your mock trend says

  • Rising. The average of your last three mocks is at least 3 points above your first three: favourable.
  • Flat. Hours went up and the percentile did not: you need a different method, not more hours.
  • Falling or erratic. Find the cause first. Burnout and weak review habits are two causes to check. A repeat with the same habits repeats the result.

Use a band built from several mocks and not one result. A mock percentile ranks you against one provider's users, so it is an indicator, not a forecast.

What changed in your preparation since the last attempt

  • Did you take full mocks under real timing, and review each within 24 hours?
  • Can you name the one section or habit that cost most of the marks?
  • Will you have more hours a week than last time, or fewer?
  • Is there a reason, such as illness or a clash with exams, that you will not face again?

If every honest answer is 'nothing has changed', expect a similar result.

How panels treat a second attempt

This is opinion in every source, and no source we use measures it. What the published selection weights show is that IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow and Kozhikode, MDI Gurgaon and FMS Delhi score a mix of CAT, academics, work experience, diversity and interview or written-test performance. None lists the number of CAT attempts.

A year of work can add marks. IIM Kashipur's 2026-28 policy gave 3 to 15 marks for 6 to 36 months of experience, and IIM Jammu scored it up to 10 with a peak at 24 to 36 months. IIM Kozhikode counts it only from 6 months. For a fresher who works during the repeat year, that is a real gain.

A fallback plan: XAT, SNAP, CMAT and MAT in the same cycle

Dates below were checked on 6 November 2026 and can change. The MBA deadline tracker keeps them current.

ExamDateRegistration
SNAP 202613, 19 and 26 Dec 2026Closes 25 Nov 2026, before CAT
XAT 20273 Jan 2027Closes 6 Dec 2026
MAT Dec 2026PBT 20 Dec, CBT 27 DecCloses 14 Dec (PBT), 21 Dec (CBT)
CMAT 20277 Feb 2027 (tentative)Not announced
NMAT 2026Window to 20 Dec 2026Closed on 10 Oct 2026

SNAP serves Symbiosis institutes only. XAT is recognised by 250+ institutes. Each exam has its own pattern, so a few weeks of separate preparation is needed.

When moving on beats repeating

  • You hold an offer that fits your goal, and the repeat gain is a few lakh, not a tier.
  • Your mocks are flat and your answer to 'what has changed' is nothing.
  • A year of delay or a loan strains your family finances or your role.
  • The college you want is far above your realistic band, so a single cycle cannot reach it.

Colleges within reach of your band are listed on CAT percentile vs MBA colleges. Those lists are estimates for General category.

FAQ

Common questions

How many times can I take CAT?

CAT allows one sitting per registered candidate per cycle, and appearing more than once in a cycle is treated as fraud. The bulletin and FAQ entries we checked mention no lifetime cap on attempts. Confirm this on the official CAT site before you plan, as rules can change.

Is a second attempt common?

We have no reliable count of repeaters, and the official CAT pages do not publish one. The selection weights we checked do not score the number of attempts. Decide on your own gap to target, mock trend and cost of a year rather than on what others do.

Will IIMs penalise a repeater?

The published selection weights we checked cover CAT, academics, work experience, diversity and interview or test scores, not attempts. How an interview panel views a repeater is opinion, and no source we use measures it. A year of work can add marks at some IIMs.

Is it worth repeating CAT for a better IIM?

It depends on the gap, your trend, and the cost. In our worked example, a ₹12.96 lakh cost against a 12.47 lakh yearly gain pays back in about 3.5 years at a 30% chance of success. If you can honestly put the chance below about 30%, moving on is safer.

Should I retake CAT while working?

You can, and a year of work experience can add marks at some IIMs. The constraint is hours, not eligibility. Check that your weekly time is at least what you had last time, and keep your current job until you hold an offer you are happy with.
