- None of the selection policies checked assigns marks to online course certificates. The only professional qualification named in a published weight is CA, CS or ICWA, worth 2 of 75 shortlist marks at IIM Kashipur in 2026-28.
- Certifications help indirectly: they give you interview material, proof of a skill for a switch, and readiness for a summer internship.
- The low-cost set worth doing is Excel, SQL and basic statistics, plus at most one credential matched to the function you want.
- Skip stacks of completion badges. One assessed course with a project you can explain beats five certificates.
- If you are sitting CAT on 29 November 2026, finish that first and start new courses afterwards.
Certifications before MBA carry no published score in any selection policy checked for this site, so they will not by themselves earn an interview call. They can still help in three places: the personal interview, the resume and the skills you need for an internship. The real question is which ones are worth the hours.
This post separates what schools score from what certificates can do. It then covers the low-cost basics, finance and marketing options, what to skip, how to talk about a certificate in the interview and a three-month plan. Policies were read on 6 November 2026 and change every cycle.
Do certifications before MBA count in admission?
Published selection policies are built from a few parts: the entrance score, academics, work experience, the interview and sometimes a written test. A few add small profile components. None of the policies on file lists marks for course certificates.
| College (cycle) | What the published weights score |
|---|---|
| IIT Bombay SJMSOM (2026-28) | Final merit: CAT 42.5%, interview 42.5%, profile 15% (graduation 5, work experience 5, extracurriculars 3, post-graduation 2) |
| IIM Kashipur (2026-28) | 75-mark shortlist score: CAT 41, graduation 5, work experience up to 15, CA/CS/ICWA 2, plus Class X, XII and diversity marks |
| IIM Udaipur (2026-28) | Final merit: CAT 55%, interview 25%, profile 20% |
The CFA, Google certificates and platform badges appear in none of these. There is no published weight for them, so a claim that a certificate raises your admission chances has nothing official behind it.
Where certifications help: interviews and internships
Three uses are realistic. They are judgement, not published rules.
- The interview. A certificate gives the panel something concrete to ask about and gives you a story with a result. Every line on your resume can be questioned.
- The skill gap. Full-time programmes include a summer project or internship. IIM Mumbai's two-year MBA has a 6-credit summer project, for example. Someone hiring you for it will check quickly whether you can use Excel or SQL.
- The switch. If your degree and job do not show a skill the target function needs, a course that ends in a project is the cheapest proof.
Excel, SQL and statistics: the low-cost trio
These three are used in analytics, finance, marketing and operations roles, and each can be learned on a free or low-cost course. Prove each with something you built, not with a badge.
| Skill | What you should be able to do | Proof to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Excel | Pivot tables, lookups, a small financial model | One workbook you can walk through |
| SQL | Joins, grouping and filtering on a real dataset | A set of queries on a public dataset |
| Statistics | Averages, spread, correlation against causation, simple regression | A half-page note interpreting a dataset |
Check each course page for its current price and whether it ends in an assessed project. Prefer the ones that do.
Finance: CFA Level 1 or investment foundations
The CFA is a long professional route with three levels, its own fees and fixed exam windows. The CFA Institute's page has the current details. Passing Level 1 shows seriousness about finance, but no policy on file gives it a weight, and it is not a degree.
It is worth the hours if you are already sure about a finance career and will carry on to Level 2. If your plans are vague, a financial-modelling course with a project is a lighter test. Basic securities-market modules, such as the NISM series, are also a much smaller commitment.
Marketing: analytics and platform certifications
For marketing, the useful ones come from the platform owners and test practical use: web analytics (Google's analytics certification), search and display advertising, and email or CRM tools. Check the provider's page for the current catalogue, cost and validity. They count for more when paired with something you ran, such as a college club page, a small business or a content project, with a result.
Other functions need little more than the trio above. Operations: a Lean or Six Sigma belt varies in quality, so the real evidence is a process you improved. Consulting: no certificate replaces structured problem-solving, so practise cases. Analytics and product: SQL, Excel and statistics.
What to skip: stacks of course-completion badges
- Certificates with no assessment, where watching the videos is enough.
- Five certificates from one platform in a month. They signal collecting, not depth.
- 'Profile booster' packages that promise an admission edge. No published weight supports that.
- Anything you cannot explain without notes.
- Paid courses picked for a logo. Compare the syllabus, the assessment and the cost first. None is endorsed here.
How to talk about a certificate in the PI
Prepare four one-sentence beats: why you chose it, one thing you learned, one thing you built or used it for, and what you will do next. Know the syllabus. A panel can ask about anything on your resume, as the GD and PI note explains.
- Why: our weekly reports came from one person who ran the queries, and I wanted to answer my own questions.
- Learned: joins and grouping. My first query was wrong because of duplicate rows, and I fixed it.
- Used: pulled [N] months of data on [topic] and found [finding].
- Next: I will use it in [project or internship] and keep practising on [dataset].
Answer: A modest, true use you can detail beats a large claim you cannot. If you did not finish a course, say how far you got.
A 3-month plan
As of 6 November 2026, CAT is on 29 November, 23 days away. If you are sitting it, finish CAT first. The free CAT Compass mock is a way to practise, and this plan can start afterwards.
- Month 1. Pick the function you want and one skill gap in it. Choose one assessed course and start it.
- Month 2. Finish the course and build one small project with real data. Write it up in half a page.
- Month 3. Draft three interview answers with the four beats. Add one line to your resume on the resume builder and stop adding certificates.
Spend the time that is left on mocks, essays and interview practice.
